Hmm...the holy sites being presided over by clerics of each faith eh?  Christian, Muslim and Jew.

I like it (a lot) but here's a problem.  Muslim clerics are NEVER, EVER going to agree to allow infidels in their mosques (of which the dome of the Rock could be considered).

There is also a great need for archaelogists to work in and under the Dome and Muslims are adamant that this will never happen.    I think they are afraid they'll find evidence of the Temple of Solomon.

Yes they are, I've been in mosques before*. You have to show respect, you have to be modestly dressed and you aren't allowed in there at prayer time, but you can still go in - I've been in christian churches that have had the same rules as well. A friend of mine was stopped from going into St. Peters in Rome because she had a strappy top and a miniskirt on).

A "need" or a "want" though? :-P As far as I know the christian church mightn't be overly happy about that either, if all the conspiracy theories about the Ark of the Covenant an the Knights Templar are to be believed....

Generally religious institutions as a whole tend to be rather wary of archaeologists digging around in places that could throw new and possibly unfavourable light on their "founding mythologies". That's not just a muslim thing, is a "big religious institution" thing.
