Jai ho says Jayendra

Jayendra is all ready for the release of 180 starring Siddharth.
Says the director it is triggered by something that he read on the Internet and which he co-wrote with the writers Subha.

'The entire story, therefore, is a logical extrapolation of the character's actions rather than me driving the screenplay in any particular direction. 180 is a mainstream film. I've waited 25 years to make this movie. I wanted to make it my way and also reach a wide audience.'

180 is a Tamil-Telugu bilingual, shot in Chennai, Hyderabad and San Francisco
'There are two heroines Nithya Menen and Priya Anand. They are very important characters in the film. They're not just there to look glamourous'.

Nootrenbadhu has universal appeal

For a director whose first feature film, Nootrenbadhu, is all set to release, Jayendra says that he isn't nervous.

"I feel I have made the film that I set out to make," he reasons, "In fact, after seeing the final output, my art director Selva Kumar mentioned that this was one film in which everything that was narrated to him made it to the screen."

Nootrenbadhu stars Siddharth, Priya Anand and Nithya Menen in the lead, and is produced by Sathyam Cinemas and Aghal Films. It's about the protagonist who wants to live impulsively. The director says, "The slick promos seem to have created an impression among a few that this is a movie targeted at the multiplex audience. But that is not so. If you equate mass with masala, then this is not a mass film. But all kinds of audiences can relate to the film's storyline and emotions, which are universal."

Jayendra also feels that Siddharth hasn't lost his appeal with the Tamil audiences despite being off Kollywood's radar for over five years. "I have been travelling with Siddharth to various cities to promote the film and people still recognize him and come up to him to chat with him. His charm is still intact," he says.

The promotions of the film have been novel and the ad guru-turned-filmmaker says that his advertising roots came in handy. "After all, that is my forte. In fact, I brought in the editor with whom I usually work on ads for the TV trailers," he reveals.

Siddharth's charm still intact: Jayendra
It has been over seven years Siddharth has not had a straight film in Tamil, but Siddharth's mentor and director Jayendra, who is directing Nootrenbadhu (180 in Telugu), feels that Siddharth hasn't lost his appeal with the Tamil audiences despite being off Kollywood's radar for a long time.

The director said: "I have been travelling with Siddharth to various cities to promote Nootrenbadhu; people still recognize him and come up to him to chat with him. His charm is still intact."

The director added that the slick promos of the film might give an impression that the film is a movie targeted at the multiplex audiences, but that is not so. "If you equate mass with masala, then this is not a mass film. But all kinds of audiences can relate to the film's storyline and emotions, which are universal." Produced by SPI Cinemas and Aghal Films, the film is set to release on June 24.

What's in a title?

The title of a film is just as important as the cast and story. Coming up with the perfect title takes creativity and conviction. In an industry where the title is anything from a simple word to a complicated phrase, there seems to be a new addition to the list.

Jayendra's directorial debut starring Siddharth, Nithya Menen and Priya Anand, "180" is drawing a lot of attention for its unique title, apart from the fact that it is Siddharth's big comeback to Tamil cinema. The stylish and youthful title leaves a lot of room for interpretation as to what relation it could bear to the story. Ask the director what it stands for and you get a smile that goes with, "It is the story. You have to watch the film to know what it is."

This title seems to have struck a chord with the youth. Digging deeper into the thought process that gave birth to it, Jayendra explains, "180 was originally a working title. But the more we got into the project, the more perfect it seemed and nothing we came up with suited it as much." The team is now giving audiences the chance to interpret the title with a contest that is being run on all radio channels giving fans an opportunity to give their views on what "180" stands for and the winners will get tickets to watch the movie on the opening weekend. "180 is a film for the entire family. I'm confident that its story and visuals will be appreciated by all," says Siddharth. While the film itself is expected to have the potential to set a new trend in Tamil cinema in terms of the storyline and visuals, it looks like it's well on its way to starting a new trend in titles as well.

Siddharth’s Nootrenbadhu highlights!

The countdown for Siddharth starrer Nootrenbadhu has started and it’s just one day left for the release. The entire team of Nootrenbadhu is confident about the film as it is a feel good romantic entertainer.

So far we have seen enough updates about Nootrenbadhu. Now let us figure out some of the high lights of the film.

The main highlight is said to be the cinematography and photographic work of the movie which appears outstanding. The film has been shot with Red One digital Camera and Phantom Flex cameras which are the highest end lenses used for realistic film making.

Music by Sharreth is completely different and the album carries beautiful and outstanding songs. Especially Nee Korinaal, Sandhikkatha Kangalil & Rules Kidaiyadhu sounds brilliant.

The colorful cast, chocolate boy Siddharth, Nithya Menon and Priya Anand are sure to draw all the youngsters to the screens.

The film marks the come back of Siddharth after seven long years in Tamil.

Mostly, Siddharth has only one heroine in his films be it in Tamil or Telugu but in this film he paired with two heroines, which is a surprising fact!

Generally, we see films made by directors or assistant directors. But an ad filmmaker turning as a director and making a cool romantic entertainer is an appreciable act.

The film is also made in Telugu as 180, which is releasing on the same day.

Nootrenbadhu was extensively shot in the beautiful locales in Hyderabad, Chennai, Malaysia, Sacramento and San Francisco.

This film is Siddharth’s first bi lingual release in his career so far.

Audiences can relate to 180: Jayendra

Ad-film veteran and first-time feature film director Jayendra has passed the litmus test, if one is to go by the reactions from both the public and the industry to his debut film, the Telugu-Tamil bilingual " 180," which released yesterday.

The film, which is set in two cities that are vastly different from each other — Hyderabad and San Francisco, stars Siddharth, Priya Anand and Nithya Menen in the lead and is about a protagonist, who, after a life-altering experience, decides to live for the day without mulling over the past or worrying over the future.

The bubbly romance seems to have caught the eye of the young crowd. The film, however, Jayendra says, can be enjoyed by all sections of audiences. "If you equate mass with masala, then this is not a mass film. But all kinds of audiences can relate to the movie's storyline and emotions, which are universal," says the director.

One of the film's major strength is its behind-the-scenes crew. Music director Sharreth has come out with peppy and melodious tunes. Jayendra says that the songs are integral to the film's narrative and that each song has been picturized with a specific concept. "We worked on the picturisation quite a bit. For the song 'Ee Vayasika Raadu...' we have used the phantom flex camera to capture the magic of each moment," he says.

In fact, the visuals by cinematographer Balasubramaniem, who has cranked the camera for films like Bala's "Sivaputrudu," provide the film with a slick look. The team even hired a Hollywood colourist, Kevin Shaw, to give the film its unique sheen.

The film has been granted a 'U/A' certificate by the censor board in Andhra Pradesh and Jayendra says that what was heartening was the fact that members of the board introduced themselves to the director post the screening and appreciated the way the movie had turned out.

Actress and film critic Suhasini Mani Ratnam says, "The film, "180" is a very young one from a mature filmmaker. It is a welcome change to see educated, well-spoken and qualified people as protagonists as against the thieves, henchmen, hookers and waywards, whom we have been seeing as heroes in our films of late. The music is outstanding and the cinematography, world-class. Both the heroines speak their own lines which is a miracle (of sorts) in South Indian cinema. It is wonderful to see Siddharth playing a character and not being a hero. Jayendra is a winner in his first film itself," she says.

Living it up!

Watch it for performances and visuals

The theme of 180 doesn't thrill you or at the least surprise you. In fact the title gives away the story a little more than one can perceive. Ajay (Siddarth), a doctor in America has been told that he's suffering from a terminal disease and has merely 180 days to live. He doesn't want the last few months of his life to end sadly for him or the people around him and leaves for India to lead a life of fun and adventure. In the process he bumps into a cheerful journalist played by Vidya (Nitya Menen); she proposes to him and before she gets the reply meets with an accident. Siddarth is advised to take her for treatment to the US and the lady learns the truth, one, that he has cancer and then he is already married and is very much in love with his wife Renu (Priya Anand). It's been narrated in a flash back mode.

The hero or heroine suffering cancer and they using it as a personal redemption, for social reconciliations or a goal to live life to the fullest has been dealt innumerable times (refer John Abraham's Ashayein, Hollywood block buster The Bucket List or the relatively recent Oye.) but the focus here is on the emotional play of the lead character and how he approaches the process of his end and also the interaction between the trio. Siddarth says “Naaku telisindhalla one day. Just one day. I live this moment. Ninnati gnapakalu levu. Repati digulu ledhu. Eeroje mukhyam.” There is a striking resemblance to Girija's dialogue addressed to Nagarjuna in Geetanjali. The scenes at the airport have turned too clichéd. Cinematography is a big asset to the story, an ordinary story and screenplay is heightened by the visuals and the palette is striking.

The script has camaraderie, some laughter, tears and sometimes gets a wee bit maudlin too. Priya Anand brings in a warm geniality to her role. Nitya's role doesn't show any variation from the character she portrayed in Ala Modalaindi. However, she does a convincing job. Siddarth's presence is strong; he is the heartbeat of the story. There are inspired performances from an ensemble cast as well.

Director Jayendra brings his experience and expertise of his ad filmmaking to movies. As an ad man, he was good at getting more attention and making people buy stuff in a few minutes; but here is he able to tell a story? Is he able to create an emotional experience? His 180 reveals his oeuvre; he profiles his characters in tumultuous personal conflict in a slow, unhurried narrative. The songs too help you soak in peace into the character's emotions. Dialogues are simple and nice. There is nothing major to complain and also nothing noteworthy either, but the film deserves a watch.

NOOTRENBADHU (180) - STYLE MEETS SUBSTANCE

Hi all,

‘Live this very moment to the fullest’ is the ideology of the protagonist in the film. Siddharth is appearing in a Tamil film after a long hiatus of seven years. The movie is mainly targeted at the multiplex audience who would love to see a stylish film sans any blood or violence on screen.

The story starts with Ajay (Siddharth) travelling to Kasi to perform rituals and he renames himself as Mano. Then, he moves to Chennai and hunts for a rental house. He finds a house owned by a couple (Mouli and Geetha) and pays the entire rent for his stay of 6 months in advance. He is happy to roam around with street kids and enjoys every moment of his life. Vidhya (Nithya Menen) is a photo journalist and is instantly attracted by his unique behavior. But, when Vidhya proposes to him, he decides to leave the city. As fate would have it, Vidhya meets with an accident and he takes her to United States for treatment. Soon, it is known that Ajay had loved and married a girl Renuka (Priya Anand) in United States and he had to leave her and fly to India for a heart-breaking reason.

Siddharth is ravishing in the role of Ajay and does every single scene with conviction. He has carried the entire film on his shoulders with his effortless and stylish performance. Nithya Menon is convincing in the role of a photo journalist while Priya Anand has acted really well in emotional scenes.

Debutant director Jayendra has ensured that he has not deviated from his script anywhere in the film in order to include commercial aspects for the film. The song ‘Rules Kidaiyadhu’ needs a special mention here as it is shot beautifully in ultra-slow motion using a Phantom Flex camera. The director must be lauded for coming out with this innovative idea in order to reiterate the fact that the protagonist ‘lives every moment of his life.’ Sharreth’s music score is a major plus point for the film and the songs are really fresh and appealing. Balasubramaniem’s cinematography is astounding and he has captured the rich visuals in Chennai and United States aesthetically.

Nootrenbadhu (180) may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it is one of the rarely made films that have style and substance in the right proportion.
