Moth Candle

Last March, she boxed it
placed it in the darkness
in back of the closet---
the one with the door never ajar
so that familiar sounds sound unfamiliar
like ears after a Rough Boys concert
or like the faraway down a tunnel heard
by the one under the pillow, smothering
under pressure of unseen hands.

Today, the door opened
light rushed in, a gabble of old church ladies
ready for tea and starving for company---
and her hands reached beyond her vision
as she had somehow grown shorter over
so few months but even so she found it
there, wrapped like a mummy already shrunken
with forgottenness and dust
Today, the sun shines again
and tonight, a single match flickers to life
the Moth Candle.

gifts of misshapen pretty things

The lights from the tree created this perpetual twilight, and i knew the look in those dark eyes. Mouth partially open, breathing fast, dimples deepening in efforts not to betray a smile. He always had so much more emotional control than i did, letting my grins leak from the side of my mouth and gleam from my eyes. I could still smell the cinnamon id been boiling as potpourri and the house was immaculate. The last kid was finally asleep and we were free!  With a good hard look at each other, i couldnt contain my huge smile anymore, and neither could he. Those dimples settled into the throne of his face and i was curled in his arms on the couch in that same moment; his hand reaching for the remote and the first strains of the annual  "Frosty the Snowman" cartoon filled living room. It glistened with the happiness bleeding from our hearts, just as those oddly misshapen pretty things under the tree glistened and sparkled with the stars of light from the christmas tree.

((*is that to much? Like to froo froo sugar sweet at the end? To much detail and sap you think or does it work??? Honestly i cant decide...*))

Angels whisper
behind me
so quietly I cannot hear
the words they speak
they touch
as a wisp of wind
or breath of air
a shiver down my spine

Time

O scurrilous concept
where now can I search for thee?
Art thou hiding behind tomorrow
or just beneath that willow tree?
If I hurry, can I outrun you
will you pause to take a breath?
O time, you wiley devil
I'll chase you 'til my death.

The right answer

Like smoke,
it unfurls before me
when ive no fingers to grasp it with.

A breath,
of hope, released
maybe to warm u in this cold world.

The Answer-

It's 10:04 a.m.

It's 10:04 a.m. somewhere
Of that I am almost sure
It's 7:25 p.m. somewhere other than there
I would chance a guess so demure
But here it's 3:51 p.m.
And as I  daydream my time as I may
I feel only vaguely the dirty little pang of guilt
Already it's passing into the far and away.

Its a puzzle

The pieces lay scattered across the landscape. Broken and jagged even in their beauty. Reflecting the sunset a million tiny times to blind me with its beauty. The pieces fall away from you, and i am all baskets trying to catch every piece so it wont break any more then it already has.  I superglue you together with my kisses, placing each piece back so carefully- tenderly, lovingly. Making sure its just so... When this is through, it will be the most beautiful thing ive ever figured out...

The Lights

It was snowing as I emerged from the darkness behind the row of houses. The yellow dog can run loose there and I can walk with my hands in pockets and mutter to myself. I should wear reflective gear but that would be geeky and probably expensive. Only once did the hill wheelers come too close so that I flattened my back against the fence. The yellow dog leaped up and barked. She can be a stupid thing sometimes.

It was snowing and I was singing some made up song so I didn't see him out there until I was almost on the street. He was the guy I always see through the kitchen window at night. His, not mine. I don't go shirtless in the kitchen and I don't have a moustache either.

I watched him for a second, waiting for the dog to finish sniffing a snowbank. He was standing rigid, legs apart, camera in hand. I didn't mean to laugh but...it must have been a challenge, you know? It was dark, but you can work with that, of course. But he must have had to get it just right, to catch the Christmas lights lighting up his house. The whole thing, even his tree in the front window, flashes on and off on and off on and off.

I guess I don't get that, flickering Christmas lights at hyper speed. I am more of a loper, a dim light moper, a shuffler in slow motion staring into and losing myself in the coloured lights.

I told him they looked pretty anyway. What the hell, huh? It's true, at least half of the time.

A stuttered apology and
vomit streaks down
the side of the Plymouth.
Crumpled fenders,
lost relationships,
empty wallets.
Stinking and shambling
across town at 3 AM
with untied shoes.
Where are my keys?
Where am I?

See you next Wednesday
