we're looking for moderators for the forum to help ensure all is smooth.

Job scope of moderators.
Q : Do I need to be 24x7 online?
Answer : No. Everyone needs a life. Just be around when needed to ensure the folks in your assigned forum are taken care of.

Q : What does a moderator do ?
Answer : Moderate posts, threads. Potentially arbitrate-yes people skills are required to help members cool down. Reduce flaming. You might not please everyone but the forum can be a peaceful but yet exciting (from discussion perspective) place to be.
Other areas :
FAQs for the sub forum.
Usage rules for sub forum if required. Some forums might require specific guidelines to run smoothly.
Redirect members to specific locations / sites / links etc.
Police the forum - there might be need to lock threads, delete threads, warn members.

Q : What are key ingredients to be a good moderator?
a. Passion for the discussions in your subforum.
b. people skills
c. negotiation skills
d. And knowing when to be involved and when not to.
(Yes you can learn on the job too)


Summary
Being a moderator is definitely not for the faint hearted. "With much power comes much responsibility". However you're important as the glue that hold the community together.
