OFFLINE | I believe it's generally known that metal evolved from blues and classical music. |

OFFLINE | Really? Blues has none of the aggression or imaginitave lyrics and barely any of the song structures found in metal. As for classical music, influential yes; progenitive no. |

Ok, try to start a debate about metal that's actually meaningful. That'll be the day.
A debate about music itself is completely meaningless. It in no way betters anything or makes a difference. It is what it is. If we find out that metal came from blues indefinitely, it is not going to cure cancer or end war. A friendly debate is perfectly normal because everyone has their opinion but trying to prove it goes nowhere. That's all I'm saying. |

OFFLINE | Metal evolved from pop such as Elvis and Led Zeppelin. Than punk bands like black sabbath came along and formed the base for most nu metal. After that Metal like Cannibal Corpse came out. That's where metal music came from. |

Yeah, I guess it just gives people insatiable urges to troll... Even when there's no one around TO BE trolled, so it's pretty much a fail. |

Well, I guess it would depend on the genre of metal. I'm no expert in blues, but bands like Sabbath and Priest were definitely channeling blues during their early years and their music gradually developed more aggression. Just listen to Rocka Rolla for example, that album could hardly be called metal.
For argument's sake, if metal did not evolve from hard rock, blues, or classical, then what do you suggest it evolved from? |

OFFLINE | Everyone is trying to over think this.
As far as metal is concerned, my strong opinion is that Sabbath's first album was the first to lay the foundation to what metal is today, and it still holds up after all these years. Their sound was very heavy with blues influence, as it has been pointed out.
But then again, does it really **** matter? |

No, it doesn't matter. At all. Can we get past that?
Talbot, I think you're somewhat on track. But I don't think Sabbath deserves all the credit. My contention for the origin of metal is that it came directly from heavy psych... which went underground in the early seventies and continued to evolve along it's own lines without taking influence from hard rock until thrash metal came to be. I think metal (and doom specifically) is the direct evolution of psych without outside influence. |
