On a bit of a flipside, I remember a married woman advancing on me, and when I saw her wedding ring, I (not thinking before speaking) said "You're married!" I don't remember her exact response, but it was something simple like "Yea, thanks for the reminder", but even more priceless was that she subsequently gave me an intentional and blatantly obvious cold shoulder. I think she and her husband might have had an open marriage though, but this incident combined with the other I described above did kinda influence my specifically looking for rings and then practicing avoidance accordingly. To date, there's only one married woman I'm currently friends with and we've always respected each others boundaries in this regard.

I worked for the President of a college many years ago and this a$$hat asked me, "What would you think if I told you I was looking for a girlfriend?" I told him, "I don't think 'insert his wife's name here' would appreciate that!"  Needless to say, I wasn't treated very well for the remainder of my employ under him.
