 OFFLINE | Winter 1941 Chapter 11:
Do you think Will will hear his wife's plea to come home? How did you feel when she covered her word "Please" with her hand as if she couldn't look at it herself? Will's only been gone now 46 days... soon with her small frame she'll be "showing". Do you think the town will question if it is Will's baby? Should she have told Will that she was pregnant?
The way that Walter Lippman describes the water being all that separates them from terror as he reports the war; did it suddenly make you feel like the war was suddenly closer to your doorstep?
Iris seems to silently feel that each passing day with a letter is the proof that Emma needs to know that Will is still alive. She seems to becoming a bit protective of Emma as well, and notices that her letters are very short.
Did you chuckle - I did - when you heard the three pennies set down on Emma's letter to Will for a postage stamp? Time flies... and only 3 cents? I personally remember seeing 3 cent stamps, but I remember using 7 cent and 10 cent stamps. What's the smallest amount you recall a stamp being?
Iris was wanting to write "Shame" on the back of the envelope that Emma was mailing to Will with the word please, and her hand outlined on the paper. What do you think Iris thought Will should be shamed of?? Do you think Iris already has noticed that Emma is pregnant? Or is Iris mad that Will took off for the War leaving a wife behind who feels that without parents there is no one looking after her and she is invisible?
Postmaster's know people's sins, and their business, do you think that Iris has a "power trip" from such knowledge? Why or why not?
