Ms Kudirat Bello has been charged with killing her neighbour’s daughter by throwing the child into a well
The 40-year-old made her first appearance at a Lagos court for allegedly throwing her neighbour’s child into a dry well.

Ms. Bello appeared, yesterday, before the Yaba Magistrate Court in Lagos, for the murder of the child who was found dead, in May, shortly after delivering a pencil to the accused. Ms. Bello was accused of master minding the death of the four-year-old, a daughter of her co-tenant.

The court could not take the defendant’s plea as the magistrate, M.O.Tanimola, sought time to seek the advice of the state’s Directorof Public Prosecutions (DPP).
She remanded Ms. Bello at the Ikoyi Prisons, pending the advice of the DPP. According to the prosecutor, Victor Eruada, the accused, aresident of No. 1, Haruna Street, Fadeyi, Lagos, committed the murder on May 23.
He said the victim’s mother had a long standing disagreement with Ms. Bello. He argued that the disagreement may be the motive for the crime.

The prosecutor told the court that the toddler had gone to Ms. Bello’s apartment to give her a pencil on request. She did not return and was found dead in the dry well shortly afterwards, he said.
He told the court that when Martin Solomon, the victim’s dad, demanded explanation, Ms. Bello explained that the toddler informed her of her wish to jump into the well; and that before she could stop her, the toddler had jumped in.
