That IS way-cool!  Saw somthing like this on tv about a recent volcano that erupted ..this week I think.  I was astonished at the lighting flickering inside the plume.

The reason for the lightning I think is that the dust particles in the plume are so dry that when they hit off each other they produce a shitload of static electricity.  Are some kick-ass pictures from the Icelandic volcano that caused so much hassle last year, makes it look like hte end of the world was coming.

It would look cool if someone could photoshop the above pic and have the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse riding down from the Heavens.
