Samurai and ninja where both trained to the height of their respected strengths.

Samurai where strong in methods of the way of the sword (not meaning only to the weapon but also the way in which they approach their entire life), honour and loyalty (i.e. bushido) where they felt the greatest honour was to die on the battlefield by a worthy opponent.

Ninja where strong in arts of espionage, deception and using methods of deciet but, most times than not, where commanded to kill themselves after their mission was complete (normally involving a high ranking assassination) so as not to reveal secrets of their techniques.

samurai wore resilient yet mobile ornamental armour, normally detailing their family crest, and carried (for the average warrior) a katana (Japanese long sword) and a tanto (Japanese dagger, normally belonging to the warrior's wife). other weapons included spears and bow and arrows (both normally mounted on horse back.

ninja wore no armour, negating it all for mobility and speed (also for the reason that they should never be in combat in the first place, they are assassins, not warriors) and carry a large variety of weapons depending on the task at hand.

one on one in open field, samurai wins 8 out of 10

one on one with samurai unkown to attack of ninja until last minute, ninja wins 8 out of 10 (samurai were trained to the limits which included their senses of sound and an alertness of always being on guard)
