| This is the story of my horse Ambessa Belle. Belle is a female Thoroughbred horse who was born to run! From birth she was trained on the track. She was running in her fourth race when her future changed in an instant. A crop(whip) from one of the other jockies in the race hit her in the left eye. The damage to the eye was horrific. Dr. Doust was the veterinarian that day on the track. She informed the owner that Belle would have to loose her eye since it was not repairable. The owner wanted to euthanize since Belle could never race with one eye.(never say never).....
Well, Dr. Doust convinced the owner to give her the horse. She performed the surgery and provided a wonderful home for 6 years. This is where I come in. I am friends with Dr. Doust. Long story short, she gave me Belle 2 years ago. Belle is an amazing athlete, at times she thinks she is still on the track. So we decided to race mountain style. I compete with her in 25 and 50mile across Colorado. We belong to an organization called the American Endurance Riders Conferance. AERC.org.
Our last race of the 2010 season was at Turkey Creek, Co. We were competing against 36 other horse and rider teams. They said go and I let her go!!! Wow what a ride. We won the race got first place by a long shot!!!
Who ever said a one eyed horse can't win!
