There are many thoughts on this. There are tons of websites that you can go out and buy 3,6,9 even 12 months worth of food all at once. Costco even have an $800 package of food that suppose to last a year. I have 2 problems with doing this.

1) The cost is the major problem for most. Many who have started to want to store food due to possible food shortage, rise in food prices, or because of all the food recalls that have happened over the last several years, don't have $500 to $1,300 to shell out all at once for these packages. If you do then more power to you. but I ask that you consider the second issue I have.

2) Tastes and is it something your family will eat. THere are some very good bulk foods out there but most of them were originally designed for hikers, campers and hunters so they are highter in salt than most people are use to. Also the menu that is included in these pre-make packages. I was looking at one years worth of food packages and half of the menu my family would not even touch. So for me it would be a waste of money to get one of these pre-made packages.

Here is my recommendation. Take a look at what you purchase for your home over one months time. Every can of vegetable, meat, salad dressing, oil, lard, coffee, tea, ect... then extend that out to 3 months to begin with. That is the first step of your goal. Buy a little extra every time you go to the grocery store to add. You need another gallon of milk then buy an extra can of corn when you get your milk. You need another bag of lettuce then pick-up a couple of extra cans of tuna. I think you get the picture.

So there is not set of rule of what foods you should get for your food storage. Except one. Store what you will eat.
