When you meet people for the first time, they will often ask you where you live.  At first people usually expect a simple answer such as;
  • I live just around the corner.
  • I live about 4 blocks from here.
  • I live in south Philly.
  • I live on the next block.
  • We live on the other side of town.

As you get to know people better you can answer with more detail as in the following examples:
  • I live at the corner of Morris and 19th street.
  • We rent an apartment on 20th street.
  • I live with my brother at 1524 W Morris street.
  • I have an apartment above the corner grocery store on Morris street.

The Difference between Southern & South

During our class we talked about the difference between saying you are from Southern Philadelphia vs South Philly or East Indonesia vs. Eastern Indonesia.

In many cases when you see North, South, East or West used its may be as an adjective focused on a proper.  When we say South Philly, it refers to a specific neighborhood in Philadelphia. When one says southern Philadelphia it could be any number of southern neighborhoods.   Other examples include:

  • West Java (Province)
  • North Star
  • South Carolinia
