Kevin Moore is a genius as far as I'm concerned. Chroma Keys entire first album is a masterpiece. I don't believe he gets credit he deserves especially being eclipsed by Rudess, who is a good player in his own right but his songwriting is nowhere near Kevin Moore's. |

I think it just depends on ones own take on it. Complex Arrangements, superb musicianship, odd time signatures, concept albums, long songs, and eclectic influences is how I would define the genre. |

agreed. Jordan Rudess has NOTHING on SpaceDye Vest. one of my favorite DT songs. i can only imagine how much better DT would have been if he stayed but, then again i'm glad he left anyways because then we probably won't get all the goodies he's done without them. kind of like (non prog related) what dave mustaine did with metallica. if he didn't leave/get kicked out, there wouldn't be any megadeth. my bad if i turned this into a DT topic, but, it was bound to happen sooner or later. |

well it's completely understandable IMO. You can't really talk about Progressive Metal without bringing up DT...but yeah the demo version of Space Dye vest is a lot superior to the studio. It's a lot more genuine and vulnerable compared to the entire bands take on the song. Nobody does Kevin moore better than Kevin Moore himself. That's why I'm glad he left but am disappointed that they didn't keep going in the same sound as Awake they kept on Scenes from a Memory and the second disc of Six Degrees of Separation. Probably now that Portnoy has left they will stop pushing for a more modern metal sound and go back to a healthy medium of Metal and progressive rock because black clouds and silver linings didn't even sound like DT at some parts which I did not like.

OFFLINE | well said. i'm going to remain hopeful for that. even before portnoy left, i was still in denial thinking "oh maybe they'll go back to being the DT they once were now that portnoy is done with his AA/12 step suite bullshit".i'm one of the few that didn't like the direction where he was pushing the band in yet, i still remained a loyal fan. |
