Regarding storage - I have seen some who say that with certain chemicals you can store 55 gal of water for up to 5 years - I believe if you are storing that much to try to dump, clean, completely dry then refill the barrel at min every 2 weeks at max monthly if not using any chemicals. Personally I do not like chemical purification e.g. bleach, purification tablets. They always leave a nasty taste in my mouth.

Many - when recommending long term storage of tap water - will tell you to use purification tablets or putting bleach for purification at the following ratio:

2 drops of regular (not scented) bleach per quart of water
8 drops of regular (not scented) bleach per gallon of water
1/2 teaspoon regular (not scented) bleach per five gallons of water
If water is cloudy, double the recommended dosages of bleach

One thing that is often not talked about regarding bleach and plastic storage containers. After long term exposure, bleach could start breaking down the plastic that is used for most water bottles/drums diluting the chemicals from the plastic it into the water, this is depending on the bleach concentration on how long it could take.
