OFFLINE | This year our Embassy in South Korea has been sponsoring an online graphic novel, known as a webtoon, with a climate change theme. The name of the webtoon is Noru which means "roe deer" in Korean.
Webtoons are really popular in South Korea with some of the best ones getting made into films. Since webtoons have a reputation for being avant-garde, often covering issues not featured in mainstream entertainment, we saw it as a good medium for a climate change story.
Set in a six degree world where small groups of survivors struggle for food and water, a visitor (the narrator) arrives from another planet which is about to suffer the same fate. He observes the central character, a member of a global organisation, who embarks on mission to turn things around and battles against a whole range of climate problems including desertification, refugees, food shortages, water shortages and so on. Earth's troubles are not clear at first and are only revealed as the story evolves. We will publish chapter 2 after Christmas with more to follow, but we won't spoil the ending!
