But if we are persistent then we just may earn one.

I don't think an eternal soul is a pre-given. The aspects of our character that define us as the unique and separate individuals that we CAN become are forged by our challenges and our triumphs.

Growing a soul most often hurts, because looking inside and finding emptiness can be piercing. But it is only when we see that emptiness that we have the fine tuned discernment that is sharp and selective enough to appropriately fill it.

In the particular way that I am defining it for the purpose of this conversation, it would be the abstract pattern of our mind that serves as a unique 'fingerprint' that sets us apart from all other humans.

By this definition, then the soul is, in your own words, pre-given.

I may buy that, and I may not, but I think you will first need to flesh out your response a bit.  

What do you find absurd about the idea of being born without a soul?

fingerprints are pregiven, but patterns are alot more complex than fingerprints
