OFFLINE | I am a citizen of Bangladesh, We got independence after a long battle of nine months in 1971. Before liberation, our country was a province of Pakistan, known as East Pakistan. In 1947, British India gave birth of two states - India and Pakistan. Pakistan comprised two separate geographically and culturally separated areas- West pakistan ( Present Pakistan) and east Pakistan ( Present Bangladesh). Administrative power was concentrated to West Pakistan. East Pakistan was being exploited economically, socially, politically, culturally and with many many grievances.
The general elections of 1970 had made sheikh mujibur rahman , the leader of the awami league which bagged 167 seats out of 169 allotted for East Pakistan, the sole spokesman of the people of East Pakistan and majority leader in the Pakistan National Assembly. But the Pakistan civil and military ruling clique had refused to transfer power to the majority leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his party. Sheikh Mujib also refused to yield to the pressure put on him for undue accommodation. Sheikh's historic address on 7 March 1971 made this point quite clear to the Pakistani military junta. Then began the civil disobedience movement. Meanwhile talks started between Mujib and Yahya to resolve the outstanding issues. While holding talks, the Pakistani military junta was bringing more troops to Bangladesh and at the same time wantonly killing innocent civilians all over the country. This clearly showed that they were totally insincere about handing over power to the elected representatives of Bangladesh. No sooner the talks failed, the genocide began, with the Pakistan army's crackdown on the people of East Pakistan on the midnight of 25 March 1971. The Bengali soldiers serving in the then Pakistan Armed Forces and para militia forces declared instantly their solidarity with the people's liberation war.
After a 9 months battle, with the cost of 3 million lives, we got independence. Almost everybody, farmers, potters, fishermen, laborers joined in the civil war. But there was a group of people, being the son of the soil of the East Pakistan opposed the liberation war and started helping the Pakistani Military.During the liberation war, the anti liberation forces (Jamat, Muslim League, and other Islamic fundamentalist groups) of Bangladesh killed a total of 3 million unarmed Bangalees, molested and raped about 4, 50, 000 Bangalee women and, on the eve of the independence, murdered hundreds of leading intellectuals to spiritually cripple the nation. A crime far exceeds, in its atrocity and inhumanity, the crimes of Hitler, Melosovitch, the nazis and the fascists. The war criminals of Bangladesh liberation war were never tried and they have never apologized for their crimes to the nation.
The Govt. of Bangladesh has taken measures to try these criminals. Please give a support to the govt.
I hate these BEASTS. I curse them like a Bangladeshi poet Shamsur Rahman
I curse today those devils of hell
who compelled me to run up the stairs
with my feet deep in the blood
of my parents,
float on rivers,
and make my bed in wild forests.
I curse them :
let them forever wander
with rotting bodies
hung around their emaciated necks.
I curse them :
when at the close of each day
they beg on their knees
for a piece of dry bread,
it will always stay ten feet away
from their outstretched palms.
their cup for quenching thirst
will always fill to the brim
with blood,
the blood with which they flooded
the soil of Bangla.
I curse them !
