   'London share fair a success'

London, Mar 9 (bdnews24.com) — The Bangladesh Share Market Fair in London has seen a huge response, says participants.

The officials of banks and financial organisations who took part in the three-day fair said there would be a large amount of investment in the country's share market if the expatriates could be assured of the market condition.

The investment will help stabilise the market, they said.

The fair, endorsed by Prime Bank Investment, was organised by Curry Life Events from Mar 5 to 7.

One of the organisers, Syed Belal Ahmed, told bdnews24.com that more than 1,000 expatriates opened beneficiary owner (BO) accounts at the fair to invest in the country's share market.

Bangladesh Merchant Bankers' Association president Sheikh Mortuza Ahmed expressed his satisfaction over the expatriates' responses. "A large number of expatriate Bangladeshis are eager to invest in the country's share market."

"But they frequently asked for financial security as they are interested in long-term investment," he said adding, "….and so they want assurance from the government in this regard."

Ahmed said, "I spoke to the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) officers before coming to London. I'll convey the expatriates' concern to them when I return to Bangladesh."

He opined that the expatriates' investment would play a significant role in improving the condition of the country's share market.

In response to a query on the impact of buyback system on the share market, the association president said the chance of sudden fall would reduce once the system, which is recognised internationally, was launched.

He suggested that the system will have to be monitored once it was launched as there are scopes to misuse it.

Regarding the government decision to float mutual funds of Tk 50 billion, he said, "It was a good decision. But it is more necessary to regain investors' confidence in the market."

Recalling the steep fall in 1996, Ahmed said there is no possibility to create a situation like that as the number of investors increased to a great extent. "It's not the year 1996, but 2011."

He also said not only Bangladeshi expatriates but also British bank Barclays' associate organisation Barclays Wealth and stockbroker company Charles Stanley expressed their interest to invest in Bangladesh's share market.

লন্ডন, মার্চ ০৯ (বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকম)- বাংলাদেশের শেয়ার বাজার নিয়ে লন্ডনে মেলায় ব্যাপক সাড়া মিলছে জানিয়ে মেলায় অংশ নেওয়া ব্যাংক ও আর্থিক প্রতিষ্ঠানের কর্মকর্তারা বলছেন, প্রবাসীদের উদ্বেগ কাটানো গেলে পুঁজিবাজারে বড় ধরনের বিনিয়োগ আসবে; যা বাজার স্থিতিশীল করতেও ভূমিকা রাখবে।

গত ৫ মার্চ থেকে ৭ মার্চ পর্যন্ত লন্ডনে আয়োজিত হয় প্রথম বাংলাদেশ শেয়ার বাজার মেলা। প্রাইম ব্যাংক ইনভেস্টমেন্টের পৃষ্ঠপোষকতায় এ মেলার আয়োজন করে কারি লাইফ ইভেন্টস।

তিন দিনের এ মেলায় পুঁজিবাজারে লেনদেন করার জন্য প্রবাসীরা এক হাজারেরও বেশি বেনিফিশিয়ারী ওনার্স (বিও) একাউন্ট খুলেছেন বলে বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকমকে জানান মেলার উদ্যোক্তাদের অন্যম সৈয়দ বেলাল আহমদ।

মেলায় প্রবাসীদের সাড়ায় সন্তোষ প্রকাশ করেছেন বাংলাদেশ মার্চেন্ট ব্যাংকার্স অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের সভাপতি শেখ মর্তুজা আহমদ।

তিনি বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকমকে বলেন, "প্রচুর প্রবাসী শেয়ার বাজারে বিনিয়োগ করতে আগ্রহী। তবে যে বিষয়টি তারা সবচেয়ে বেশি উত্থাপন করেছেন, তা হলো আর্থিক নিরাপত্তা। তারা দীর্ঘ মেয়াদে বিনিয়োগে আগ্রহী। তাই তাদের বিনিয়োগের সুরক্ষার নিশ্চয়তা তারা সরকারিভাবে চান।"

"আমি লন্ডনে আসার আগে এসইসি কর্মকর্তাদের সঙ্গে কথা বলেছি। ফিরে গিয়ে প্রবাসীদের উদ্বেগের কথাগুলো তাদের কাছে তুলে ধরবো", বলেন মর্তুজা।

তিনি বলেন, "বাংলাদেশের শেয়ার বাজারের সঙ্কট উত্তরণে প্রবাসী বিনিয়োগ বিশাল ভূমিকা রাখতে পারে। প্রবাসীদের বিনিয়োগ পেলে বাজার পরিস্থিতি আরো উন্নত হবে।"

বাংলাদেশের পুঁজিবাজারে বাইব্যাক পদ্ধতি চালু হলে তার প্রভাব কী ধরনের হবে- জানতে চাইলে মর্তুজা বলেন, এটা আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে স্বীকৃত। এটি চালু হলে সহসা দরপতনের সম্ভাবনা কম থাকে। তবে এর অপব্যবহারের সুযোগও রয়েছে। তাই তা বাস্তবায়নের ক্ষেত্রে অনেক খুঁটিনাটি বিষয় দেখতে হবে।

পুঁজিবাজারে বিনিয়োগের জন্য সরকারের ৫ হাজার কোটি টাকার মিউচুয়াল ফান্ড গঠনের বিষয়ে তিনি বলেন, এটা ভালো। কিন্তু এর চেয়েও বেশি প্রয়োজন এখন বিনিয়োগকারীদের আস্থা ফিরিয়ে আনা।

"এখন ১৯৯৬ সাল নয়। এমন পরিস্থিতি সৃষ্টি হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা নেই। শেয়ার বাজারে এখন অনেক বেশি লোকের পার্টিসিপেশন রয়েছে", বলেন মর্তুজা।

তিনি জানান, শুধু প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশিরাই নয়, ব্রিটিশ ব্যাংক বার্কলেসের সহযোগী প্রতিষ্ঠান বার্কলেস ওয়েলস ও স্টকব্রোকার কোম্পানি চার্লস স্ট্যানলিও বাংলাদেশের বিষয়ে আগ্রহ প্রকাশ করেছে।
