OFFLINE | I saw it yesterday and a lot of my friends haven't seen it yet. I really want to find out what everyone though of it!
I could go into a scene-by-scene depiction of the movie and my thoughts on it, but I don't think anyone wants to here that.
Highlights for me:
Neville's cardigan. I mean, come on!
Maggie Smith! I just can't stop loving this woman!
Helena Bonham Carter's portrayal of Bellatrix. She has really thought about the character.
All of Snape's moments! Just.... yeah. I can't even put into words how much I cried during the memory.
That's all I can remember right now but I'll think of more things and I hope we can start a little discussion |

OFFLINE | I really REALLY loved the scene with McGonagall and Neville, talking about blowing up the bridge!
Neville: "You're really giving us permission to do this Professor?"
McGonagall: "Yes Mr. Longbottom"
Neville: "I mean really, Boom?"
McGonagall: "Boom"
Neville: "How are we supposed to do it?"
McGonagall: "Why don't you consult with Mr. Finnigan, he has a history of blowing things up"
It went something like that! I LOVED THAT!!! lol
And McGonagall, protecting the school and then the little "I always wanted to use that spell" and then the little school girl look on her face!! I LOL'd!
Molly killing Bellatrix...that got a HUGE round of applause in the theater I went to! :-)
I don't think I have been able to say this about a movie before, BUT it stayed with the book, but changed it and made it better at the same time! Granted, a couple of things were massively different, BUT IT WORKED!!!!
Overall, I loved the movie, and I want to see it again, like NOW!!! :-) |

OFFLINE | I can't get enough McGonagall She was simply bad ass in this movie. The scene towards the beginning where all the students are in the great hall and Snape tries to find out where Harry is, obviously didn't happen in the book, but it worked! When she stepped in front of Harry and started dueling Snape I wanted to high five her then and there haha.
I only have one criticism, but it pretty much ruined the movie for me.
They left out WAY too much of what Dumbledore says to Harry in King's Cross, and I HATED that they left out Harry's speech to Voldemort in the end. For me, the theme of the series as a whole is good vs. evil. And they made the end into a duel, when (what I got out of the books is that...) no matter the strength and skill Voldemort might possess, he can't touch Harry's whole, untarnished soul. I think Rowling sums this up beautifully in a quote from Dumbledore that they left out of the movie...
"His knowledge remained woefully incomplete, Harry! That which Voldemort does not value, he takes no trouble to comprehend. Of house-elves and children’s tales, of love, loyalty and innocence, Voldemort knows and understands nothing. Nothing. That they all have a power beyond his own, a power beyond the reach of any magic, is a truth he has never grasped.”
By turning it into a duel I felt like they negated the point of the entire series.. Just my opinion. Thoughts? |

OFFLINE | I agree, however the whole speech to Voldemort as they were circling in the Great Hall would have stopped the action packed pace of the movie at that point...they already slowed it down a bit with King's Cross, somethings just don't work on screen like they do in the books. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have seen those scenes, but the movie makers also wanted to make sure the movie didn't lose interest of those who didn't read the books. I watched it with an outside perspective even though I read the books, and I know they are 2 different mediums. While I agree with you that it kinda took away the whole good vs evil and using love instead of wands, it needed to be done and changed because if not the movie would have dragged at the climax. |
