 OFFLINE | A reader's review
This is a beautifully written novel with avid description, a captivating plot and fantastic characters. The author effortlessly describes the inter-tribal animosity, and the relationship between them and the outside influence of the missionary and Christianity. He shows how whilst one tribe embraces the new religion another rejects it and resents the foreign interference in traditional ways. Love is the only thing which can cross such divides and the author uses Uzo and Ivuakua's relationship to explore the different cultural and social implications. I love period drama - and this is period drama with powerful messages - the effects of slavery by foreign powers on the indigenous community and the prostitution of women at a young age by their own tribe and families. |
