OFFLINE | Well, JFK had guts, I'll give him that much. LBJ was the most arrogant pres we've had and a liar. (The man urinated on a secret serviceman's leg!). Nixon was a crook. Ford was like weak tea. Carter was a tax and spend loon. Reagan was a fine president imo. Bush Sr was fair but initiated the whole NAFTA thing. Clinton had a few decent ideas but was overshadowed by the fact he couldnt keep his pants zipped up. Bush Jr had some decent ideas too but apparently circumvented the CIA in order to build up a case to invade Iraq. Plus I think he was weak on immigration reform.
And now we have this guy at the helm. After nearly 3 years in office, Obama has almost nothing he can run on. His record is abysmal. His #1 achievement to date is that he said "ok" when asked if they could take out Bin Laden. Thats it. He took our debt and tripled it in less than 60 days. We've been struggling with it ever since.
But Reagan! He advocated reducing tax rates to spur economic growth, controlling the money supply to reduce inflation, deregulation of the economy, and reducing government spending. Hence he was re-elected in a landslide! He ended the cold war, supported anti-communist movements worldwide and spent his first term forgoing the strategy of détente by ordering a massive military buildup in an arms race with the USSR. Reagan negotiated with General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev, culminating in the INF Treaty and the decrease of both countries' nuclear arsenals. After President Reagan's military buildup, the Soviet Union did not further dramatically build up its military.
He also persuaded Saudi Arabia to increase oil production, which resulted in a drop of oil prices in 1985 to one-third of the previous level; oil was the main source of Soviet export revenues. These factors gradually brought the Soviet economy to a stagnant state during Gorbachev's tenure.
Reagan declared more militant policies in the War on Drugs. In 1986, Reagan signed a drug enforcement bill that budgeted $1.7 billion to fund the War on Drugs and specified a mandatory minimum penalty for drug offenses. And apparently it was successful in reducing rates of adolescent drug use at the time.
Reagan signed the Immigration Reform and Control Act in 1986. The act made it illegal to knowingly hire or recruit illegal immigrants, and required employers to attest to their employees' immigration status.
Now thats a good record! |
