OFFLINE | On the Today Show, Spike Lee told Meredith Vieira, "The United States of America is the most violent country in the history of civilization."
Never mind the Aztecs with their assembly lines of human sacrifice. Never mind the Nazis throwing people into furnaces, Mao's China stacking up corpses by the tens of millions, or the nightmarish atrocities that occurred under Stalin's reign. The most violent society in the history of the world is the United States of America. Take it from Spike Lee, the absurdly pretentious punk who called for Charlton Heston to be shot with a .44 caliber Bulldog.

OFFLINE | I'm not necessarily sure that I agree that we're the most "violent" country in the history of civilization. I do agree, however, that guns are certainly out of control in our country. I'm not sure if it's because people are "paranoid" that they be safe....so they arm themselves...in case that happens or if people are really getting guns to "kill" someone. I think that more should be done with proper information getting out to the necessary people so that they can use the guns responsibly. I, personally, would never own a gun....but it doesn't mean that I would want someone else to NOT have one. I think it's more about being "respectful"..and understanding that a gun is a weapon...and should be held and used with the utmost respect. |

OFFLINE | i don't know that i would equate the right to bear arms with violence (though i'm not suggesting that's what you're suggesting either). in fact, in places like chicago, the crime rate went up following the city-wide ban on handguns (and it had been decreasing previously). after D.C.'s 1977 gun ban, the city was first or second in crime rates among the largest 50 u.s. cities, for 15 years straight. since australia's 96 gun ban, homicides have risen 3.2% and armed robberies are up 45%. in the seven years following britains 98 gun ban, gun crimes increased 340%. following irelands handgun ban, the average murder rate has increased 144% over what it had been previously. meanwhile, crime across the board is on the decline in america, yet it has increased in many of the countries with gun bans. the information is out there on the web.
keep in mind, this is more of a response to spike lee's claims than anything else.

Not really surprised Lee said this. Spike Lee is another product of a very liberal education. He went to all these film schools and has hung out with some of that liberally-minded crowd.
Most likely he bought in to the garbage that the liberal professors pump into our kids' minds in colleges these days. |

Mary I agree.
I'm a gun owner myself. But I also believe that the gun problem is out of control in our country. I'm all for citizens exercising their 2nd Amendment rights. But I do think it would be a good idea to regulate what guns we are allowed to purchase. I dont think private citizens have any reason to own automatic weapons. Furthermore, I do think the govt should introduce regulation that would make it nearly impossible for someone to modify their semi-automatic weapon, to fully automatic. And if that cant be done...then ban that sort of gun altogether.
Its why I refuse to join groups like the NRA. |

wait a minute. firstly, autmatic weapons are illegal. secondly, it IS impossible to make it impossible for people to illegally modify a semi-automatic gun to be fully autmatic. and thirdly, are you telling me every semi-automatic rifle and handgun should therefore be banned? |

OFFLINE | Um man, its not impossible. Its illegal, but not impossible. See http://www.weaponscombat.com/full-auto-conversion
And no, i dont think semi-automatic weapons should be outlawed. I do, however, think that only Title 1 firearms should be legal.
Title 2 (machine guns, sawed off shotguns, silencers, etc) should be outlawed imo.
