It has been about 5 weeks since we setup MK. From a handful of fans, we grow to 600 strong & growing. Before you know it, we are >1000 strong by NDP

Perhaps it's time to think what should we do next for our site before it get too large. There are several options:

Scenario 1: Maintain & do nothing
Pro
Survived with just a FB wall. Easy to use and free.
Con
We aren't going anywhere. FB restrict lots of things including maintenance, integration for better apps and RSS feed. Without feed for example, admins have to update tech news on our wall manually. That's not good for long run and none of our admin is doing that too. Fan base is restricted in FB and nobody can search us outside FB. No exposure = no ad revenue. No telco or anyone will sponsor us.

Scenario 2: Setup an independence site
Pro
Basically unrestricted except cannot directly use the Wall. We appeared on Search Engines. Unlimited fan base. We can even come out our own Android or iOS forum apps or redesign the whole page. More exposure means sponsor and ad revenue.
Con
Need some money to maintain.

Scenario 3: Get the best of both worlds
Pro
Anything FB can't do, it will be source out to our site, while enjoying the wall on FB. The custom apps you see on our page now is hosted externally.
Con
Still need some money to maintain an independence site.

Case Study
Here's a good example you guys can have a look and see how much we can do with a few paid apps (Scenario 3):

I had maintained my game guild website (http://www.ROJguild.org/) for about 12 years (at peak of >200 in 2000) and did a major revamped last year. Its FB counter part is http://www.facebook.com/pages/Royal-Order-of-Justice-ROJ/105107296232764. Both are linked. FB site not in use (I need 25 temporary Likes please. Thx). The main site is auto run by feed with latest news for the past one year.

I had shown the new ROJ site to many shops in SLS after revamped and they would like to be part of it (aka sponsor); but my fan base of less than 10 is not convincing....hahaha

So if we are able to create a similar site like ROJ for MK, besides not worrying the downfall of FB, we can keep going with better platform in years to come.

Currently MK is riding on ScaleNutz (my webstore) resources to host its custom apps. If I sold off or close my webstore, all MK apps will be cut off or move to ROJ. ROJ's server maintenance is paid by me and likely to close it in 2016 when the domain name lease is up.

Dooms Day Scenario
When you are in IT long enough, you will know nothing last forever. Facebook is not going to last forever too. There is always a better platform to over take it or a newer trend coming up. Can this group survive on Facebook alone in 2 years from now? From signs, we see that we are going Mobile Age next year and Facebook haven't provide the solution beyond 2012. Should we stay put or should we move forward.

PS Custom website will never die as long as we change it with time.

What I propose we should do
Run a donation drive, so that we have resources to buy domain name and host for 2 years. The extra money (if any) will be use development and pay for paid applications.

Google+ is a social network plus it is not mature yet. Lots of functions still missing and less accessible than Facebook. It lack a Fan Page like FB too.

Whereas a website is something different. We can do it similar to Engadget or like ROJ (http://www.ROJguild.org). Full pledge website with our URL, forum and chat etc.

Great idea! Count me in for development. But yeah I only know core programming in Java, C++ and C#. I've never really worked in website development.

No worry. You can suggest improvements or even help debugging the scripts.

We will be using PHP, CCS3, java, Ajax and HTML 5 (as much as possible). Many things will get off the shelf for now to reduce development time. We can improve it along the way
