Rider 50 - Problems - Where to start?

Hi,

I have recently purchased a new Rider 50 (it arrived yesterday). I have spent the last two days trying to set it up but am getting absolutely nowhere.
Firstly, i am unable to download the maps from the DVD supplied. The process starts and then i get and error message telling me that attempt has failed. In fact i get this same message whenever i try to do anything that involves downloading from Brytonbridge 2 onto the rider 50 device.
Secondly to this when i plug the Rider 50 into my computer via the usb port i get a warning messgae up that seems to suggest that there is an issue with the device itself. I get the option to scan and fix problems (tried this to no avail) or to conti=nue without scanning.
Quite frnakly it looks like this is the worst purchase i have ever made.
If anyone is able to offer any advice or support with this it would be greatly appreciated. I'm on the point of giving it up altogether and demanding a refund.
