| A family member has had bone density scans for some years. Her 2008 dexa took a dive, but recovered over the next four years. Then her 2012 dexa dropped off a cliff again (15% loss since 2012) and she suffered two vertebral fractures.
She has had some calcium and PTH tests - her calcium levels have been normal and have ranged from 8.5 to 9.8. Her PTH levels have ranged from 49-96. She's had one kidney stone, and low vitamin D level (24.5) but has taken supplements for years.
She is menopausal (surgical, in 1994) and otherwise seems healthy to be having this rapid bone loss.
I can't shake the thought that there might be a parathyroid issue at play. Thoughts?
Oh! And I showed her the Symptoms of Parathyroid Disease from parathyroid.com - she has a lot of those -
loss of energy, don't feel like doing much
don't quite feel normal, hard to explain
feel old, don't have the interest in things you used to
can't concentrate
osteoporosis and osteopenia
more irritable, cranky
worsening memory
decrease in sex drive
kidney stone (1)
up and down blood pressure |
