I've known people that found it embarrassing when it required being watched while they peed.
In this case, is their being watched absolutely necessary? I've never been watched while being tested for any job purposes.
I guess it's only necessary if you you want to make sure the person being tested isn't using someone else's clean urine. |

Drug testing was a condition of employment while I was still working. You want the job, you take the test. Period. Didn't matter what your feelings were. |

If I had to pee in a bottle, the worst case would still be good:
1) I'd always be "clean"
2) I'd have improved aim
So, no downside. |

Here's one example of dealing with a **** test that isn't closely watched... They're at least as easy to get as the drugs are...

OFFLINE | With apologies to the late, great Jim Croce and his beautiful rendition of "Time in a Bottle"
Pee in a Bottle
If I had to pee in a bottle
It would be no big deal, you see,,,
Cause I'm clean every day ... and I'm happy to say
That they wouldn't find something in me...
If I could make laws for just a day
And I could make this law come true
Then if you wanted the dough, then a whizzin' you'd go
And if you used, then no money for you...
But it always seems to be the case
That there are people that expect stuff for free..
And if those people had to pee
They'd treat it like they'd been slapped in their face...

Some of these people are amazingly cleaver at getting every known possible subsidy. Perhaps they could use some of that cleaverness to find an actual job? |

Debbie ... sorry to hear of your hard times. A couple years ago I had a friend who was widowed, lost her job and got really sick all in the span of a couple months. She was going through hard times but would not accept monetary help from our group of friends even though we all offered and even tried doing it in an anonymous, sneaky way. Thankfully she's back on her feet now.
I did a lot of research and found several organizations in the Kansas City area that offer a hand up to people in need. Those who did not qualify for "welfare" ...
You might take some time and google Catholic Charities, Goodwill and organizations like that ... even if they cannot help, they'll have a list of other organizations who can. I found my friend assistance with her utilities (no qualifying needed) by just calling the utility companies, they will refer you on ... and a food bank who stocked her shelves with food donated from a local grocery store. I was amazed what was available to people out there who could not qualify for food stamps.
Please check into http://www.angelfoodministries.com/. I'll be glad to help you look into these things if you need my help.

OFFLINE | LOL at Bob InBama -- LOVED that song...and maybe we could make them sing it on American Idol?!!!
My answer would be YES for blood testing and here's why:
I have seen firsthand (working at a grocery store for 12 years) the people who truly USE foodstamps/public assistance for what it was originally designed for -- and buying A LOT of groceries....being careful to use that money well. I have, though, more times than not -- seen the abusive side of public assistance. When the people coming through MY line have better clothes, cell phones, fancy nails, hairdos, and most everything..but they're buying their "prepared" foods with foodstamps....it really does annoy me. I know there are a GREAT MANY people who do not qualify for foodstamps because it is "income based" -- and because they had been gainfully employed...and need a bit of assistance...they do not qualify -- because of their past income. So, what the government is saying is...we can't help you...because you may have a bit of money in the bank....so we're not having to assist you.
I believe that the better way to "dole out" the assistance would be to run it like the WIC program is currently run. They have to get "specific" things -- like whole wheat bread, milk, cheese slices, peanut butter, and now produce.
As far as the "embarassment" of having to do a "pee test" -- well too bad -- if it were a company they were getting hired for...they would have to do it. Years ago (when I first started working at the grocery store) they had the "paper" food stamp money -- which I could see being "embarassing" to them. But..I would not be too proud if my kids/family needed the help....I would just toughen up and look the other way. Now they give them a card like a debit card which hardly EVER scans through our machines...which means I have to type in their account number and I get to see their face and name....so to me...that would be MORE embarassing! |

I like this idea ... something like flexible spending medical cards USED to work for over the counter drugs. You scan it and it will be accepted only for those things that are keyed in for it's use. |

And sometimes the cellphones aren't the cheap ones. I've seen some walking around with DROIDS. Wtf? |
