Hi I am trying to find out information on probiotics and other supplements to give to my husband.. His legs were injured by a chainsaw over a week ago, thankful it stopped before the bone. Within 4 days of the stitches, we were back in ER due to 104 fever. He spent the next 3 days fighting off this infection. He has been on 4 antibiotics in the last week and a half. The first was not strong enough for the wound, the 2nd after the 2nd dose sent him into anaphylactic shock. The third worked well, but by after 48 hrs the leg was swollen again. They added a 2nd antibiotic which has made the difference. We are home now and he is on the last antibiotic for the next 10 days. His body is so depleted and weary. ( He is a farrier, so getting him strong and healthy is so needed so he can return to working on horses again) We are not ones to take meds unless needed. A friend from church has brought over beef bone broth, kombucha, coconut water and miso for me to get into his system. I am just not sure which supplements to start now or wait. I am assuming that the Yeast assassin would be good for him afterwards. Any ideas would be so greatly appreciated, it has been a long journey but we are so thankful for God's protection and healing thus far.
Blessings
Tammy

Hey Tammy--I wrote you out a long reply last night but then the Beeyoutiful forum was down and I could not post it, so sorry for the delay. Will try to recapture what I wrote before. First of all, it's a blessing your husband's leg bones are OK! And it's a blessing there are antibiotics for crisis situations like he has been in. I hope he will continue to improve quickly and that his full leg health (and overall health) will be restored. Our 18 yo daughter does natural hoof care on our horses, so we know how important strong legs (and backs) are for farrier work. It sounds like your friend brought y'all over a bunch of good food medicines.

Keep up the bone broth for all the gut-healing properties it provides. It also provides lots of minerals, which will help with the healing. The kombucha is probiotic-filled, so that's good for him, too. Any probiotic-rich foods you can get in him will do wonders for strengthening and rebuilding his healthy gut bacteria population: yogurt (plain, full-fat, organic preferable), kefir, lacto-fermented sauerkraut (can even make from just salt, water, and cabbage) and other veggies.

But b/c the antibiotics will have taken a big toll on his system, it's going to take supplements to build him back up, too. Wait until the antibiotics are finished, though, b/c otherwise you'll just erase the money you spent on probiotics. I would recommend the Big Gun of Beeyoutiful's probiotic line: Gut Guardian Supreme, which has 10 strains and a potency of 50 billion, which is a lot. This probiotic is stored AND shipped cold, so you know those good bacteria are still alive and thriving as opposed to your average drugstore variety of probiotic. This is a high potency amount, though, so he might have to build up a bit to it first. You do this by opening a capsule and taking maybe just 1/4 of it at first (or at least split up one capsule into an a.m. and a p.m. dose). Do that a day or two to see how he handles it. If there are no severe die-off symptoms (like bad fatigue, nausea, headache), then up the dose a bit more. Take first thing in the a.m. and before bed, but you can also take it with food. Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride (creator of the GAPS--Gut and Psychology/Physiology Syndrome Diet) has, at different times, recommended both methods for taking a probiotic. If you decide to give him Yeast Assassin for a while, too, be sure to dose that at a different time than the probiotic. It sounds like SuperDad vitamins might be in order for a while at least, since you said he's depleted and weary. But if he doesn't bounce back as well as you and he hope, I'd recommend a stint on the GAPS Diet just to make sure his gut is healthy for the long run.

Keep us posted!
