 OFFLINE | Q: My U.S. passport was lost/stolen. What do I do?
A: Please report it immediately to the local police at a local police station close to where you lost your passport or close to your hotel. Vietnamese authorities will typically require you to obtain a police report before they issue a new Vietnamese visa. If you have immediate travel plans, bring a copy of your itinerary or e-ticket so we can issue an emergency passport. Emergency passports are issued on a case by case basis, with validity period from three months to one year, depending on circumstances. For specific requirements please visit the State Department’s website at: http://travel.state.gov/passport/lost/lost_848.html#ReplaceLostStln
Contact the Embassy when you are ready to apply for your passport. The U.S. Citizen Services Unit, Consular Section, U.S. Embassy, 170 Ngoc Khanh, Hanoi is open between 08:30 and 11:30 a.m., 13:00 and 15:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for emergencies.
Once the emergency passport is issued, you will have to go to the Immigration Office at 44-46 Tran Phu Street, Hanoi to apply for a visa replacement/exit visa. Normal procedure takes 3 working days for a Vietnamese visa replacement/exit visa.
Q: Can I add supplemental visa pages at your Embassy? What do I need to bring?
A: Please make an appointment for this service. You need to fill out form DS-4085 (available on our website or at our office), pay $82 (in U.S. dollars or by credit cards). You have to leave your passport with us and get your passport back between 15:00 and 16:30 the following day.
Q: Can I submit a passport renewal application for my wife? She cannot come in the morning to submit application.
A: Passport applicants overseas must submit applications in person. If she cannot come in the morning, she can make an appointment with us to come in the afternoon to submit her application.
Q: How can I renew an adult passport? How long will it take for my passport to be ready? Can I request expedited service?
A: The U.S. Embassy cannot provide expedited passport services so plan ahead! Passports are printed in the United States and take from 7 to 10 days for processing. This does not include securing a Vietnamese visa, which is required for departing or staying in Vietnam. All applicants for U.S. passports must apply in person. The U.S. Embassy cannot receive applications by mail. Appointments are required. Please follow the instructions on how to renew U.S. passport from outside of the U.S. at http://travel.state.gov/passport/renew/renew_833.html
Q: What do I need to bring to renew a passport for my child who is under 16?
A: Both parents and the child must appear in person at the U.S. Embassy to apply for a child’s passport. For a list of required documents and more information, including what to do if one parent is unable to appear in person, please see our website for applying for or renewing the passport for a child under age 16 at: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/minors/minors_834.html |
