 OFFLINE | Hey Guys,
I'm having troubles in understanding the question. I know where to look, so don't worry, I just really need a clarification, if you can help, since without understanding, it won't work..
When she requests to explain how the deep and surface structure correlate with the distinction between story and plot.. what does she mean?
A) the fact that a story has a beginning, middle and end whereas a plot is just a sequence of events unorganized?? what does that has to do with deep and surface?
B) Surface, i guess, might be satellite events whereas Deep should be kernels, between the lines?..
I hope you understood me and if you can't answer, don't, I realize it might be problemetic..
thanks anyhow!!

OFFLINE | Mostly B. The story - the chronological sequence of events - is in the deep structure, while the plot - the scrambled and reorganized events - is the surface structure. Respectively, kernels make up the deep structure while satellites are the surface structure. |

OFFLINE | I agree, B. and don't worry, it's like in class where she uses really strange and sometimes unneccessary words in order to say something different. I mostly read it "telegraphically" (only the main words, not the ones which connect them...)......
Imagine alberto saying "You'll be FINE, it's so easy!" |

OFFLINE | First, I want to appologize for driving people mad, including myself,
Second, here's my Q
I mean - I understand the whole question and the whole thing about the distinctions, but no one says it explicilty. Freud doesn't talk about narrative, he talks about the mind and CS and UNC. IOf I connect this to stories and plots, it's cause she asked me too... how can I prove such a thing?
My question is - Can I say it on m own phrasing or must I find someone who wrote about deep and surface? I've read them all..
Thank you guys, I hope I didn't drive you crazy, but I am about to decide to drop the whole American Studies once and for all... |

OFFLINE | DON'T LET ZISSER BREAK YOU!
You're right, Freud doesn't talk about narrative in the texts we've read. What I did is use what we learned from class and connect whatever I could to texts I could. It's lacking, yes, but it's something.
Others have gone far and beyond looking for other Freud texts, but I have no intention of doing that. If she wanted me to read those texts, she should've bloody assigned them instead of the Anal Erotism one..... |
