Ovid Clyde GILL (1930-2009)
Ovid Clyde enjoyed a distinguished legal career for the past 48 years, having been called to the Grenada Bar in January 1961. Then in 1962, he did a brief stint as Magistrate of the Eastern District (Grenville & St. David’s).
On the 3rd March 1970 Ovid was appointed a member of the Public Services Commission (by Gov. Hilda Bynoe) for three years.
After his call to the Grenada Bar (on the 12 May 1976 by Gov. Gen. L. V. DeGale), he served in private practice for 19½ years there before proceeding to Barbados in 1980 (during the years of the Grenada Revolution) to take up the position of Legal Counsel with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). He served the CDB for 20 years before returning to Grenada in 2000.
For the past 9 years Ovid Clyde, now a veteran lawyer, had been a full time Consultant with Ciboney Chambers (7 H. A. Blaize Street, St. George, Grenada). During his career, he was particularly well known for his brilliance in conveyancing.
More recently, in September of 2006, Ovid was the Attorney-at-law and representatives of the Grenada Bar Association for '40th Anniversary of Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court'. This local committee planning activities for Grenada.
The Celebrations Committee is comprised of Justice Kenneth Benjamin (chairman), His Worship Mr. Henry Pariag (magistracy), Ovid Gill (of course), Ms. Nordica McIntyre (permanent secretary and ministry of legal affairs), Mr. Rae Roberts (journalist and media rep), and Mrs. Gloria Payne-Banfield (retired public servant and N.G.Os rep).
This was the Committee's first meeting and has held regular meetings to plan celebratory events. Ovid helped The Grenada Bar Association organize a public symposium which was held on 15th February 2007. The event took the form of a feature presentation by Prof. Simeon ‘Randy’ McIntosh, Dean of the Faculty of Law of U.W.I, Cave Hill, Barbados. The presentation will be followed by an interactive panel discussion. The panel was comprised of Prof. McIntosh, Dr. Francis Alexis and Mr. Lloyd Noel.
However, on the 20th April 2009 the secretary of the Grenada Bar Association (GBA), Sabina Gibbs, sadly informed its members of the passing of Ovid Gill:-
His funeral was held at 1:00pm the following week (27th) at the Bethel Methodist Church in St. Paul's. He was later interned at St. George's Cemetery.
Ovid Clyde lived at 'Woodlands' Golf Course, St. George, Grenada (West Indies) and was widower to his late wife Sheila and father of four children: Gigi, Haydn, Dwain and recently appointed Chief Magistrate, Tamara Gill. He was also the father-in-law of Ruggles Ferguson, (managing partner of Ciboney Chambers and former president of the GBA).
On 2nd May 2009 - Ovid Gill was remembered
Members of the local bar, on Monday 27th April, turned out in their droves to pay tribute to one of their peers, Ovid Clyde Gill who died on April 20 at the age of 79.
His contribution to the legal profession was memorialized by all of the eight persons who spoke during a special sitting of the High Court. Senior High Court Judge, Madam Justice Clare Henry recognised that Ovid Clyde leaves behind a record of accomplishment to his family.
Justice Henry indicated that from all accounts, Ovid Clyde was “one of the blessed among us” who recognised his purpose of life. “His service to others, obviously formed a large part of that purpose,” she remarked.
Attorney General James Bristol who spoke on behalf of the Government of Grenada characterised Ovid Clyde as being humble and dedicated. Queen’s Counsel, Celia Edwards saw Ovid Clyde as a man of many spheres. Edwards said that in each sphere of his existence he was able to earn the respect and admiration of all those around him, including his colleagues. She said that as a father he brought up his children with love, humility and integrity.
Ferron Lowe who is associated with the St. George’s-based law firm Ciboney Chambers shared his fellow partner’s passion for the profession. Lowe described Ovid Clyde as being a consultant, teacher, and friend and along with another veteran consultant, Edwin Heyliger, the two of them kept the younger attorneys within the firm very focussed and balanced.
According to Lowe, Ovid Clyde constantly admonished them to avoid being selfish and to always consult with their colleagues. “He continued to make these points which missed many of us, that we are too selfish in our profession,” he remarked.
President of the GBA Ashley Bernardine said Ovid Clyde’s iconic disposition made him a mentor, and an exemplar to each of them. The one-hour and 20 minutes tribute was witnessed by Prime Minister Tillman Thomas, former Governor General, Sir Daniel Williams, and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Lawrence Joseph, all of whom are lawyers.
The special High Court sitting concluded with a one-minute silence in memory of the late Ovid Clyde Gill.
On Tuesday 5th May 5 2009 - Lloyd Noel (former Attorney General of Grenada, prominent attorney at law and political commentator) wrote:
“The legal fraternity took the time off last week Monday, to bid farewell to our late brother Ovid C Gill who had departed this life the Monday before, 20th April. Nearly all the lawyers in Grenada, the judiciary and a lawyer from St Vincent, gathered at the High Court with his family and other friends to pay tribute to a truly outstanding professional and human being.
And later the same day, at another impressive ceremony at his local Methodist Church in St Paul, he was religiously remembered and solemnly sent on his final journey to the St George’s Cemetery, to join his late dear wife Sheila, who predeceased him many years ago. But as the inscription on the tomb they now share proclaim, 'United at Last'.” |
