OFFLINE | here are a few examples of my theory.
christianity - the teachings of jesus. what made christianity a revolutionary benefit for mankind? initially, it was personal and decentralized. its tenants did, and still do, challenge one to improve themselves and their lives, and not live as a hypocrite. to not only talk the talk, but to walk the walk as well. but what happened? inevitably, as christendom became the mainstream, a structure arose around the religion, which led to the catholic church's bloody and political history. as a result, the religion was made less about the original message, and more about promoting an agenda and preserving wealth.
the same principles that jesus taught led to my next example.
the age of enlightenment - brought about by the american revolution, the age of enlightenment is what's led us to the modern age. the idea that all men are equal, and that government operated at the concent of the governed, gave rise to modern democracy. and the founders took what was at the time, extreme measures to ensure that the ruling class remained decentralized, and at the mercy of the people. but what happened? inevitably, their vision was chipped away at, over the centuries, for a myriad of reasons. we lost track of what it was that made us great in the first place, and have transformed it into something else entirely.
the adage is true. absolute power does corrupt absolutely. it is always in the little guy's interest, when the power structure is as decentralized as possible. |
