Oh dear god.

I do love the little boy who makes the comment about not being able to be a white supremacist because he's Asian . . . wonder if anyone in authority sees the humor (and irony) in his statement?

For a class photo, "... All girls wear pink and all the sports guys wear tank tops and we wore white ... identify ourselves and look back and say that is our group of friends right there".

I too would pursue it ... the key question is how were others in a similar situation treated ?   Were the girls wearing pink singled out and suspended ?   Where the sports guys ?  doubt it .

What else is going on to make principal question safety ?  What's the history with this group ?

I too would appeal the decision especially for a Junior or Senior whom it might jeopardize their college applications and the like.

Certainly there is more to this than the snippet on the video clip ... must be some history ... even still, this event does not rise to the level of a last warning sort of thing that warrants suspension  ... but that's just me.  I'll bet ya a cup of joe, that this principal has had trouble with this group and was looking for an excuse.  In my mind this incident is not the ones.

I don't think the white t-shirt in itself is a racist thing. But, I feel there's (much) more to this story. Is there a possibility that these kids are demonstrating white-supremacy in other ways not shown, and the white t-shirt thing is more or less covert-aggression? Otherwise, this seems like nonsense.

I dunno, racism is a funky thing to me. I've seen people say that "Cup Of Joe" can be perceived as racist. I didn't get it at first because at one point it merely reflected a cup of coffee not bastardized, that is until someone referenced something about "Joe" is racially-rooted because "Joe" refers to a black guy. I guess it's perception combined with one's sensitivity to old stories or history. I'm not personally sensitive to someone wearing a white t-shirt, but if there's more going on than meets the eye, then who knows?

in my controversial statement of the day, so what if they ARE racist or white supremacists? is that not their right to hold whatever views they want? and if their ACTIONS (not their feelings or perceived hidden intentions) somehow violate school policy, then you have to handle that on a case by case basis, NOT by suspending anyone with a white t-shirt, or all members of a certain social group.

to me, this smacks of the idiocy behind zero tolerance policies, and how they offer an excuse for administrators not to have to think about each situation and make a decision accordingly. i just hate to see the avenue political correctness has led us down, and honestly, i think it creates a lot of resentment, possibly driving many of those who have been victims of the PC machine toward racists or bigoted attitudes.

it also smacks of the whole hate-crimes issue, which i find just as absurd. a murder is a murder is a murder, regardless what the motivation was. yet through hate-crimes, we can add additional charges for motive alone.

i mean this IS 1984, and the thought police. that is the culture we live in now. yet so called "reverse racism" is fine. black panther thugs wielding bats outside of polling stations is fine. heck, even SEIU thugs committing a hate-crime by beating a black tea party activist and calling him the N word is fine. there is no more justice when certain crimes only apply to certain groups in certain situations. sickening.

I agree that zero tolerance policies can inflame further dysfunction. But then,,, should there be any tolerance for racism, and if so, who gets to decide how much racism is to be tolerated?

This article offers a clearer explanation (but I cannot for the life of me remember how to make it into a link):

OK.  I get it.  But I think we've veered off track

(What?  A topic that veers off track?)

The issue is this ...

Since when ...

a) Does wearing a white T Shirt tag one as a racist?
b) Did wearing a white T Shirt become a disciplinary action?

I don't think someone can say, "Oh but that wasn't it."   Because it was.  If these kids (the group included non-whites) were disciplined because they were racists, then it would've been done for that reason ... not because they wore white T-shirts.

I think this video is shameful because it seems to completely lack any substantiation. So for the fun of topical convo, I'm going to offer a hypothetical.

Suppose a bunch of kids whose ethnicity is comprised of Whites, Latinos, and Chinese, came together with a common yet secret hatred of blacks. Well, as secrets go, somehow word got out about this group's formation and their shared and common racial hatred. The group quickly caught word of the leak and tightened up at their seams. Realizing they couldn't openly discuss or demonstrate their shared hatred of blacks, they uniformly chose to wear white t-shirts to symbolize their unity and shared hatred of blacks.

Maybe this is extreme, but for the sake of a topical question, would this then be a case of racism and the white t-shirts represents the racism shared specifically in this one clique of people?

You're proposing a hypothetical and if the hypothetical were the case, then you may have a point.  But let's deal with the actual situation, which is not hypothetical.

The situation:  Some kids were punished because they wore white T-shirts.

Reality:  If there is some sort of rule against racism, invoke that rule because of actual actions or evidence involved.  Wearing white t-shirts is not evidence nor is it a problem.  If one can't substantiate the claim, then they have no basis for the claim and therefore, no basis for a punitive action.

Neither "they wore white T-shirts" nor "I think they may be racist kids" is justification enough.

This is where the actual situation seems ridiculous to me; they couldn't substantiate it and I agree with your opinions and I feel presenting the video content as is is very irresponsible.

But I do feel there's a lot not being represented here because I don't particularly understand how anyone would put it together that white t-shirt equals racism. I think something happened and whatever that is hasn't been represented. And whomever done "it" might not even be anyone in this particular group of people.

So what really happened here?
