| Ok, I am sure some of you noticed my absence at last nights meeting(10/2).
I was actually right outside at 6, after a harrowing period of catering to everybody else after work (and their school). My plan was to drop my kids off at subway, and have them sit at the Cyber Cafe' upstairs at a cost of about $20 by the end.
Then I started to think about what business actually NEEDED to be discussed. My business was to tell the assembly
1)..EVENTS COMMITTEE, although we had not formally agreed to do the Ron Paul event, we would arrange the protest and possibly a gathering of some sort after. This is something that we did not need a meeting to decide, or arrange. In fact as an organization centered around protests, we did not even need a meeting to agree to do this protest.
2).. Media Committee, people were working on a website but there is nothing to present. The flyer will borrow heavily from the website so that too is in the works.... in other words nada.
3)..All Other Committees...I would need to try to get people to volunteer to join the committees so we would have something to be able to report, but so far nobody wants to do anything.
Yes, I sat there with my daughter who I was going to ditch to a computer for a mindless 3 hour meeting.. thinking... do I want to spend 3 hours participating in slow death by concensus when we really didn't have anything of import to discuss; the presented agenda didn't posit anything worthwhile, I assure you!
I ate dinner with her, went to TeaBerry for dessert and a harrowing game of Trouble, then went home and helped her with her homework. I spent less money and my time was spent in a FAR more valuable manner.
I realize some people want to get our movement going, but having more meetings doesn't translate to more action. We need to have as many meetings as our business demands, and no more. Much of our decision making can simply be made online, without creating the "monkey wrench in the gear" situation we now have.
If you want to have the regular meetings on Weds instead of Sun, I have no problem with that. If you want to just force as many meetings as possible I can't do that anymore. I have 3 jobs and a family to support; my limited time can NOT be sucked up by meaningless meetings. This was one. |
