Ok, so who here meditates? I mean REALLY meditates, like outside of the do jang. Who has time set aside time on a daily basis to work on this seriously? I finally FORCED myself to do it for the last few nights. I am starting out at 5 minute incriments and it seems to be doing an awesome job of helping me relax after work (I think 5 minutes is all my adhd brain can handle to start with). The breathing cycle I am using is 6 second inhale 4 second hold 6 second exhale, which feels just about right. So does anyone have any pointers for a beginning meditator? OH i downloaded a bunch of chinese bamboo flute mp3's....let me know if you want em and i can e-mail em to ya(they are soooooothing!)

In my experience, meditation is a centered, peacful time. A time of clarity and calm which can hopefully transend into our lives full time. Meditation is a great tool to reach this euphoria and create fullness. Furthermore, leading us to mastering the art of living life.
Question: Sa Bom Nim Segarra, is there any one meditaion technique that you find the most effective?

I meditate. I enjoy it. I trained briefly under Charlotte Joko Beck, followed the teachings of Kapleaus Roshi and trained with a Taoist named David Sauer. I even had the opportunity to train with Sunim Lee, Sauk Kyu.
I enjoy it. I find that it helps keep me centered. Of course as an adult with ADD, there are few things more challenging.

A simplified definition of meditation is the connectedness one expereinces when thier mind ceases to be dominated by mentatl chatter. GM Hwang kee used to say 'Breathing forms the waves that carry the mind'
GM used to say there are many paths up the mountain. So there is no one end all be all meditation technique. We have eight basic mediation technies in MSD Kwan. Some of which have varataions. They all focus on one thing; Being present minded.
Ilbon Ho hep Bop- General deep breathing
Muk Nyum Hae gong bop - Quieting the mind technique
Joongshin tong il bop - thought unification technique.
Muk Nyum Bop - Repeating technique (Counting, repeating from memory)
Hoe Jeon Ho Hep Bop - Rotating breath & Microcosmic orbit.
Semi Ho Hep Bop - Fine breath technique
Yon Su Bop - Light Dregs technique
Muagyong Bop - Non Self method.
We monitor our progress with the ancient methods:
The five gates, which are the emotional versions of the five elelements. And the SameJae and Sam Sang. These refer to past, present and future as wll as heaven, earth and man. These are the ancient ways leading to Kyejae (a purified mind).
They are fairly simple practices that lead one to maintaining ones center for longer and longer periods of time, they help you realize when your not centered and how to get back on track, etc. They are explained in detail in my upcoming meditation book/cd combination. I am finalizing the CD this month and I have decided that this will be the first book available in the online store. It will have a variety of meditations on the CD. One being a simple 2-3 minute mediation that can be used in class and is a great intro for students. The intro meditation will also be an instant download when you get the book so you can use it at home, put it in the IPod and use it on lunch breaks etc.

Are you happy?
"What is the main purpose of Buddhist teachings?"
- Its main goal is to reach awareness.
"... And what is awareness?!"
- Awareness is the ultimate happiness. (Satori)
"Are you happy?"
About meditation, I think there's no more than this.

Here is a meditation we use in Moo Sa Do Kwan, it is called Kuemgang Muk Nyum. Basicaly you start with the number one, then count up and down. When you get all the way up to nine you reverse the count. Laid out numericaly it creates a diamond shape. It requires quite a bit of concentration.

Master Segarra
I was wondering what Kuemgang translates to and what the outcome or goal of this meditation was? Also the speed you count, is it in time with the breath or as fast or slow as you can?
Admin- Posted: 11 Jun 2006 12:59 pm Post subject: Keumgang
Keumgang means Diamond. The speed is not that important it's similar to chanting. Usually you want to keep a steady pace. The idea is to focus and overload the mind so it can't think of anything else.
In Moo Sa Do Kwan we focus on what we call the seven levels of centeredness:
1. Finding the center
2. Re centering
3. Keeping the center while moving (solo)
4. Keeping the center while being externally distracted (solo)
5. Keeping the center while working with a partner (teamwork)
6. Keeping the center while in conflict with a partner (communicating, emotional)
7. Keeping the center while in danger (combat) |
