Sweep’s Favorite Liver Treats

1 lb Organic* beef liver or Organic* chicken livers

1 cup Organic corn meal

1 cup wheat germ or 1 cup cooked quinoa if you want gluten free treats

1 cup linseed meal (ground flax seed)

1 tbsp oil (I use Extra Virgin Olive Oil)

1 egg

Garlic, fresh, finely chopped - to taste – Sweep likes lots so I use about 4 cloves.

Add a bit of water, if needed, to smooth mixture and mince liver in food processor. Addall wet ingredients and process until well mixed. Fold in all dry ingredients

Grease a cookie sheet & spread the mixture 1/2 inch thick. Bake at 350°F for 10 to 15minutes till firm / brown. Cool & cut into squares.

Freeze until needed.

* Use Organic liver. The liver removes toxins from the body. We don’t want to exposeour pups to any unnecessary toxins.

I put these into snack size zip-lock baggies in the amount I think I will use in areasonably short amount of time. (Helps prevent freezer burn if you make a large batchand do not cut them too small for packaging). The squares can be cut into tiny, pea-sized bites after they are defrosted or you can easily tear of pea-size bits as you go.

When I have an event where I want the “super motivator” I defrost a baggie overnight inthe fridge. Leftovers – very rarely happen! If you do have leftovers they will keep in thefridge a couple of days.

Remember you want tiny bits that your dog can quickly gulp down so you can keepdoing your activity without your dog choking on large treat that requires chewing.

I've seen this recipe before. Thanks for sharing it Layne.
If your dog has skin issues, substitute the corn meal. Any suggestions? (I don't bake).

You could likely substitute coarse millet flour or buckwheat groats for cornmeal if you want to keep the treat gluten free.  Ground oats (coarse oat flour) might also sub for cornmeal. (I'm not totally sure on the oats as I have a gluten free kitchen which is why I substituted the quinoa for the wheat germ.)

Keep in mind that you may have to slightly vary the water you add to the recipe when you substitute fours.

Thanks Layne! It's handy having someone who knows their way around the kitchen here
