Having just gone through my second round of K-12, I think they'd do better to focus on quality than quantity.

OFFLINE | I don't think most of our kids could focus longer than we want them to now. As Scott said, it needs to be quality above quantity.
And P.S. - I teach somewhere in those grade levels so know what I'm saying. |

One disagreement I have with quantity is that, for example, if one hour was added to each school day, then it'd only result in a few minutes being added to each class. And those few minutes per class doesn't seem like enough time to me to accomplish anything substantial and may simply result in more wasted time. But extending the school day by 2 hours seems like too much for the teachers to accommodate. So if more hours in the class room per year happens to be the answer, then I personally favor more days per school year.
Anywho, I do agree with increased quality. But in watching the behavior of the children at our local high school during their, well, gym classes anyways, I think it's necessary to enable to schools with more effective methods in dealing with student misbehavior. Last year while out for a walk, the kids were in the tennis court cussing and saying crass things to each other. The teacher said something to the kid, and the kid mouthed back, and the teacher responded to that saying something like "Don't talk to me like I'm your mother!" But that was all she could do, and the misbehavior continued... |

OFFLINE | Discipline issues and extended class times are two different things. And I have to say that I'm ashamed of the teacher who made the comment about a student's mother . . . I'm absolutely positive that is NOT the way to gain control of a class. |

Ditto !
I'm more concerned with the new proposed policy of randomly testing kids for pot ... how about we spend that money and get some of our teachers back to work ? |

OFFLINE | I belief in dual enrollment, parent involvement and most importantly making children excited to learn on their own
(to many people feel it is someone else's job to teach and not the child's responsibility to learn) |
