November 1974
- The last time Katherine Kolodziej, 17, was seen alive was as she was leaving the Vault Bar and Grill in Cobleskill around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 1974. Police said she apparently declined offers from friends for a ride to the campus, and theorize that she accepted a ride afterward from a driver of a yellow Volkswagen sedan. An intense search by area law agencies, college security and about 100 volunteers soon began. The search and wide publicity in regional newspaper publications proved to be fruitless in obtaining new tips or clues. Investigators interviewed the entire student body at Cobleskill, as well as Volkswagen Beetle owners in the area.
- Nothing new was learned until Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, when an unidentified hunter in the Cross Hill area of Richmondville discovered a “red cloth” in the distance while using binoculars to spot deer, according to The Daily Star. The hunter knew about the search, as Kolodziej was last seen wearing a red jacket. The state police were contacted, and about a quarter mile from that location an imitation blue suede shoe, similar to hers, was also found. The search finally found the body in a wooded area about 300 feet from McDonald Road, about two miles southeast of the village. An autopsy at Albany Medical Center found that Kolodziej had died of multiple stab wounds.
