Hello everyone! I was present for the launch of Guppy. The weather really was not nice; there were strong winds and heavy rain. In fact, only family members and friends were present, and I was the only fan there. This was maybe because it was announced too late on Laura's webpage. However, it was pretty clear for everyone to see that most of the people there were sailors, which meant that they were not affected ( turned-off?) by the bad weather. I am not a sailor, I just do kayaking, and as an maintenance electrician by trade I often work in the harbour. The tank ships have to leave the harbour in time, no matter the weather.
I was warmly welcomed by Laura’s grandmother. We had a chat about how Laura had changed with the lawsuit and the State Juvenile Boards' attitude. There was also a couple who had sailed in to Den Osse with their sailboat. Even Laura’s mother and her sister Kim came all the way from Harlingen. I heard that Kim does trapeze performances and that she will make the entrance examination for the State Circus.
In the pictures that were taken by the ‘Jeugdjournaal’ [Youth journal; a Dutch TV magazine for juveniles] and me you can see how the launching procedure went. Shooting the ceremony was not easy because I had to use an old analogue camera, which I had not used for a long time. So, I shot pictures and video alternating from one to the other while Laura walked around her boat. During the christening ceremony, I was again too late with the shooting of video footage but the ’Jeugdjournaal’ people managed to take some nice pictures. Laura in fact had to strike the bottle twice. First, she tried to smash it at the reeling, but it did not work. Then she tried it with the anchor. This time she was successful. Happily, the boat did not sink. Laura’s father had told me earlier that it is a good boat.
It is a very sturdy boat, made of 2 cm thick Polyester, which actually became a little thinner and weaker now. Therefore, it was improved and customized for heavy use. When the bottle of Champagne ended its life, the champagne odour came blowing towards us. What a pity! Fortunately, it was not a too expensive one.
After that, Laura sailed towards the big boat [the Dekker family’s living boat] of her father, running on the auxiliary engine, which can also be used to drive an electric power generator to supply power for the boat if there is not enough sunlight for the solar panels. At the same time, all the family members and some good friends went aboard the living boat, too. Laura’s father constructed this boat. Someday It will become a large sailing ship; the masts still have to be installed. It has a size of 20 x 7 meters, and you might call it a living house as well.
Granted permission by Grandma Dekker, I joined them. Everyone was soaked with the the rain, but that was no problem for ‘water is water’ with the Dekker family. The boat is not yet finished and we had to climb through a hatch 60 x 80 centimetres wide and then down a ladder to the inside. We arrived in the hall and the kitchen. It was a nice kitchen by the way, like in my home. All the wet clothes were hung up and the central heating was turned on, so it became very cosy on board of the living boat.
Trough the portholes we could see Guppy which was lying a little bit above our eye level. This seemed to be an unusual view to me since we were a little bit below the water level. I really found it to be extraordinary to be allowed to join the family since I am nothing but a stranger to them; well, the Dekker family is very friendly and easy going. Moreover, I now understand why Laura learned sailing so easily. She almost spent her whole life aboard the boat, except for a short time when she had to live in a caravan while the living boat was still under construction. At about 4:30 PM the first people left the party. Laura’s mother and Kim had to drive back for about three hours. I joined them, put my wet jacket on again, and headed home.

Terwaterlating van Guppy

Hallo allemaal! Ik ben de terwaterlating van Guppy aanwezig geweest [Den Osse, 2 mei 2010]. Het was niet bepaald mooi weer veel wind en regen. Maar er waren eigenlijk alleen familie en vrienden aanwezig. Ik was denk ik de enigste fan. Het stond ook erg laat op haar website. Maar je kon zien dat het bijna allemaal zeilers waren. Het weer leek geen invloed op hun te hebben. Ik ben dan geen zeiler, maar een kanoër en mijn werk is ook veel buiten in de haven als elektrotechnisch onderhoud monteur. Dan moet de zee tanker ook weg als er storing is weer of geen weer. Ik ben netjes opgevangen door de oma van Laura, en er even mee staan praten over Laura, hoe ze toch wel wat veranderd was door toe doen van rechtszaken en Jeugdzorg. Er was ook een stel die waren met de zeilboot gekomen even langs varen he. Haar moeder was ook het hele eind uit Harlingen gekomen met Kim de zus van Laura. Kim daar hoorde ik ook al van dat die bijzondere dingen dé, een auditie bij het staats circus met een trapeze nummer. Hoe het ging met de boot kan je zien op de foto's en de filmpjes van jeugd journaal en van mij. Dat viel niet mee het filmen een oud analoog toestel uit het stof gehaald maar hij dé het nog. Dus afwisselend foto filmpje en Laura maar om haar boot lopen hij moest het water in. De doop van de boot was ik net weer te laat met filmen, maar Jeugdjournaal heeft het er goed op staan. Ze moest wel 2x slaan met die fles, eerst op de reling, dat ging niet, toen op het anker. Dat was prijs. Hij zonk ook niet. Goed bootje, had ik al van pa Dekker vernomen. Het is een degelijke boot 2 cm polyester, tegenwoordig wel wat dunner en zwakker, en hij was hier en daar nog wat aangepast voor zwaar gebruik. Toen de fles aan gruzelementen ging kwam de champagne lucht ons zo tegemoet waaien. Zonde, maar het was gelukkig niet zo'n dure. Toen ging Laura naar de grote boot van pa varen met de nieuwe hulp motor - en generator voor de stroom voorziening in 1 (voor als er te weinig zon is voor het zonnen paneel). Daar ging gelijktijdig de Familie en een paar goede vrienden naar de woon boot die haar vader zelf aan het bouwen is. Een gigantisch zeilschip gaat het worden. De masten moeten er nog op. Hij is 20x7 meter; gewoon een woonhuis kan je wel zeggen. Ik mocht mee van oma dekker. Iedereen verzopen van de regen was geen probleem. Water is water bij de familie Dekker. De boot is nog niet klaar. We moesten door een klein luikje van 60x80 cm via een lader naar beneden. Daar kwamen we zeg maar in de hal en keuken. Een mooie keuken, gewoon als thuis. Alle natte kleding werd opgehangen en de CV aan gezet. Van alle gemakken voor zien de boot. Door de patrijs porten konden we guppy zien liggen een stuk hoger dan waar wij zaten. Een vreemd gezicht vond ik. We zaten onder het opper vlakte water niet veel maar toch. Ik vond het wel bijzonder dat ik er bij mocht zijn, ik ben tenslotte een vreemde, maar de Dekkers zijn vriendelijke en makkelijk mensen. Ik begrijp nu ook waarom Laura zo gemakkelijk kan zeilen. Ze leeft bijna heel haar leven op een boot en een tijdje in een caravan toen de woonboot gebouwd werd. Om 16.30 gingen de eerste mensen weg. Laura's moeder en Kim moesten nog 3 uur rijden. Ik ben gelijk mee gegaan, de natten jas weer aan en naar huis.
