Most people have probably seen the ritualistic banter on some comment stream somewhere on the internet, with vegan promoting kindness to animals and non-vegans calling them righteous, with various degrees of "factory farming is necessary to our economy" to "taking honey hurts bees" in the background.

Id like to put forward my (as ever) totally extreme interpretation of this thing.

When super powerful aliens come by our lovely and beautiful, resource rich (and it is resource rich, biologically and in terms of materials for making ourselves rediculously comfortable) planet and decide whether or not to squash us out of existence to get at our stuff (you can frame this as a moral argument or religious one if you like, I find super powerful aliens to be both more obvious and more motivational), you've got to ask, what is going to be their reasoning for the decision?

Well.. I reckon we will be judged to our own standards. and that basically means "How do these beings treat the concept of consciousness? If we are found to treat consciousness with the infinite (i.e. bigger than we can possibly consciously grasp) respect and compassion it deserves then hopefully they will shake hands with us and come and have a party. If we are found to treat consciousness as just another commodity in our unending struggle to prove / who is the bigger Dick / who can control more minions /   we might find that they commoditise us and yum up our planet or birth their mega babies on it or whatever.

On this basis, I think it is our duty use our cross generational language and analytical skills to study the creatures that share this planet with us as we study a prospective partner. To learn to love and cherish these beings and give them everything within our power and understanding to make them happy. We have quite a strong folk understanding of the psychology of Dogs and Cats... we must learn to have this understanding of all our fellow beings. Study the psychology of cows and of goats and eagles and beetles and expend all the effort we can in making sure that their surroundings, our surroundings are as condusive to their joy as to ours, so that our planet radiates happiness through all shells of existence (from the analytical to the spiritual).

As well as protecting us from Mega Aliens, this will create a unity of morality within our race that will drive our evolution through the (as yet) barely touched realms of Mega Consciousness
