As a drone-less novice who has been watching every video on the interwebs for the last few weeks. I am serious in getting my own to play and race with. I have several general and specific questions that I would like you to share your experiences on:

  • What should I be looking for in a first Drone?
  • Realistically whats the price barrier to entry totaled up?
  • I'm not afraid to build my own from parts including wiring and soldering. How much better is a custom built drone and is there much of a price difference?
  • Where should I be looking to buy from?
  • Also how many spare prop's and parts do you keep and how often do you break pieces?
  • FPV Goggles: They look costly but worth it. Fatshark looks the standard; any recommendations or places to buy from?
  • Batteries and charging; Something I don't see covered very much. With flight times of less than 10 minutes you are obviously going to have more than one battery. How many (do you have) or is reasonable keep on hand? Also how long does it take to recharge one?
  • What NZ laws do need to be aware of?
  • Finally any recommended guides, readings, videos, tutorials or advice would be appreciated!

Its nice to see a Kiwi based forum, this sport looks amazing to get into.

  • What should I be looking for in a first Drone?
  • Answer : Something strong that wont break easy
  • Realistically whats the price barrier to entry totaled up?
  • Answer : For a realy good competitive one about 1000 for a beginner entry you can Pick up ARF kits for alot cheeper
  • I'm not afraid to build my own from parts including wiring and soldering. How much better is a custom built drone and is there much of a price difference?
  • Answer : It will be alot cheeper and you will gain the advantage of being able to fix it when it breaks from a crash
  • Where should I be looking to buy from?
  • Answer : There are Many many shops that will have them , www.IVrotor.co.nz is a great NZ shop that has super low prices, there are others too https://www.facebook.com/groups/1612502189033519/permalink/1612714555678949/ that link has a great list for all the NZ shops and all parts
  • Also how many spare prop's and parts do you keep and how often do you break pieces?
  • Answer : i myself keep about $40 - 50 worth and then reorder when i get down to 5 or 6 sets
  • FPV Goggles: They look costly but worth it. Fatshark looks the standard; any recommendations or places to buy from?
  • Answer : Fatshark Predators are good beginner goggles, I have seen Fatshark Dominator V2's and they are really nice if you can afford them
  • Batteries and charging; Something I don't see covered very much. With flight times of less than 10 minutes you are obviously going to have more than one battery. How many (do you have) or is reasonable keep on hand? Also how long does it take to recharge one?
  • Answer : I tell people 4 - 6 batteries , and you can recharge them in 20 mins if you do a fast charge at the track...
  • What NZ laws do need to be aware of?
  • Answer : Read this https://www.facebook.com/groups/rotorcrossnz/900751819947058/ (Codex v2 from rotorcross files section) It has all our rules in it , Most will also be covered in the welcome speach on the day
  • Finally any recommended guides, readings, videos, tutorials or advice would be appreciated!
