obama and the left were up in arms over paul ryan's medicare plan, and even used it to help win an election up in new york. they rolled out the scare tactics, the commercials, and the works.

yet now, obama says he is open to making cuts in social security and medicare. well simply making cuts won't do anyone a bit of good. you have to have a complete restructuring of the programs. in fact, simply making cuts would be worse than what ryan was proposing. i mean obama already made half a trillion in cuts to medicare, and that didn't help anyone, or solve anything.

They're compromising to try to get the Republicans to go along with legislation to raise the debt sealing so our government can continue to function.  Unfortunately , with this kind of compromise there are no winners.

seems like they're trying to bundle too many things together, without the time necessary to give everything the attention it needs. they keep letting themselves run up against deadlines, which results in everything being rushed.

if they just could've come to an agreement earlier (say an equal amount of cuts to the amount that the debt ceiling will be raise) and quit with all the add-ons, then they would've had time to work out the details by now.

Maybe if Congress worked the same hours us regular folk do, they would get things done.

Bryan's right, but there's a sinister reason behind it.  It isnt just about compromise.  If you look back in history, both Ronald Reagan and George H Bush were talked into raising taxes.  In each case, they were promised that if the GOP would raise taxes, the Dems (in control) would vote to reduce spending.  In each case, taxes were raised, but spending never decreased.  Both presidents were lied too.  And campaigns were launched against them to show how both presidents broke promises and raised taxes.  It sunk Bush's campaign too.

The GOP has been elected on the promise that they will not raise taxes.  If they cave, you can bet your last dollar that it will be used by the Dems to show how the GOP broke their promise to the people.

The Dems are smart to use this political tactic.  They are offering things that are very tempting, and it looks nice now.  But there is no guarantee that they will ever follow through and reduce spending.  And you can bet they will use this against the GOP in 2012.

you're right. and it's the same thing now. obama wants to raise taxes now, with the PROMISE of future cuts over a decade.
