OFFLINE | Just yesterday, I was watching a famous person talk about how he was broke, alcoholic, and essentially homeless 15 years ago. But something inside of him motivated him to turn it all around and use it for the good. Now he's someone who touches the hearts and minds of millions.

What he's doing is really good, I think. At least it motivates me to want to do better. |

OFFLINE | An absolutely AWESOME follow-up to the video above ...
On Wednesday morning, Williams appeared on a local Ohio radio show after local and national media couldn’t get enough of his silky smooth vocal chords. While talking with DJs from WNCI, the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers called in and offered Williams a job as well as to pay the mortgage on a home for him (the offer comes around 5:00 below):
But according to the Associated Press, multiple job prospects are rolling in for Williams. WNCI told the AP that ESPN and MTV have expressed interest. Williams has already received a $10,000 offer for voice-over work, and a Pennsylvania radio station wants him, too.
I hope he makes it. |

OFFLINE | Yes...I saw that video Scott...and I sure give the guy credit...I think I was more touched that he got back in touch with his mother.... THAT makes me very happy.....as tough as times get.... you have to remember that your mom is always on your side!!!!
Wednesday, January 5, 2011 --
A Brooklyn panhandler whose "golden radio voice" made him an overnight web sensation was stuck in Ohio Wednesday afternoon - delaying his long-awaited reunion with his mother in New York.
Ted Williams, 53, had expected to fly to New York to do a live interview on the "Today Show" tomorrow morning and see his 92-year-old mom after years apart.
But TMZ reported that airport officials will not let him board a plane because he doesn't have proper identification to make the trip. Instead, he spent the afternoon at a Columbus, Ohio, courthouse trying to obtain a copy of his birth certificate, the site said.
A convicted felon and recovering addict, Williams was living in a homeless encampment in Columbus until two days ago, when a video showcasing his startling talent went viral on the Internet.
The video, produced by the Columbus Dispatch, shows him begging for change on a street in exchange for a soundbyte of his buttery, baritone voice.
The interview has led to a whirlwind of media attention and job offers, including one to do voice-over work for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
But perhaps the greatest opportunity to come from his newfound fame was a reunion with his mom, who lives in Bedford-Stuyvesant in the home he was raised in.
During the an interview on "The Early Show," Williams broke down in tears when he spoke about his mother.
"I apologize. I'm getting a little emotional. I haven't seen my mom in a great deal of time," he said on the program.
"One of my biggest prayers that I sent out was that she would live long enough for me to see me rebound or whatever, and I guess God kept her around and kept my pipes around to maybe just have one more shot that I would be able to say, 'Mom, I did do it before,'" he said. "I might pass away before her or whatever, but my dad didn't get a chance to see this. But God is good."

OFFLINE | sadly, it seems this guy may be blowing his second chance at life.
On Monday night, Ted Williams, the Ohio homeless man that recently gained fame for his rediscovered radio voice, was detained along with his daughter by Los Angeles police after a disturbance call at a Hollywood hotel, reports Entertainment Weekly. The pair were released an hour later.
Although there were reports that the argument was non-physical, Williams said that "fists got flying, none of which were mine. In the process...I got scratched on my face."
Williams has said that he became homeless due to alcohol and drug abuse, but that he has been clean for two and a half years. However, his daughter claims that he has been drinking alcohol.
"He's consumed at least a bottle of Grey Goose a night, at least. That's not including the Coronas he orders, that's not including Budweisers he orders, that's not including the other alcohol, the wines. He drinks -- heavily," she claims.
we don't know whether or not this is true, but what happens when you suddenly throw all kinds of money at an addict?
i fear this guy is falling prey to the hurdles associated with overnight fame. and it really seems like all these companies like kelloggs and kraft are just using the guy, along with people like dr. phil. they're all trying to cash in on this guy's story, and sure, he's getting paid, but no one is really helping him.
i mean we as a society are making people famous overnight, and then basically throwing them to the wolves.the guy has more than a dozen convictions, and we expect that everything's going to be fine now, just because he has some money? |
