OFFLINE | This is strictly non technical. It's Management stuff that I studied long ago in XLRI while doing my PGDBM from there. The subject was called Organizational Behaviour (OB) - II. The "II" bit stood for "Groups". "I" was Individuals, "II" was Groups and "III" was Organizations. These were compulsory subjects in the first three consecutive terms.
One of the first things that was told to us was that groups are dynamic. They form for a purpose and last varying lengths of time depending on the objectives. I guess it is the same here. Each group goes through five very recognizable processes: Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing and Adjourning. The last one remains a bit debated but the first four are pretty well established.
You form in whatever ways, as we have. Then you "storm" for role clarity in what are known as the "task" and "maintenance" functions. Then you "norm", that is, set ways in which the group shall function. Finally you perform - deliver what the group was created for (quality of goods delivered is not the topic here). Finally you break up after the group task is done.
I guess we are still in the "Storming" stage. Any other views? |

OFFLINE | Absolutely perfect topic Bhatta !! I have shared a link to this on the VRCE wall so hopefully others will join in soon.
I think 'Norming' cannot be independent of Storming because some of the 'Storms' are caused by the 'Norms' that are being established. |
