It might actually be too hot.  When I plant here it just has to be warm enough not to frost at night.
You may want to plant in January or so or you could wait until Sept to plant as it begins to cool off some.
Just my two cents and I've been wrong before.  LOL

I didn't even try this year (insert look of the agony of defeat).

Previously, I planted them around March.  it's spring here at that time and sometimes summery.

Maybe I'll try again later this year, in September, like you suggest.

Since I try to grow them in pots, any tips on soil type?

There's *NOTHING* as good as a home grown tomato.

Yum!

Ooooh, okay.  I was a complete failure at potted tomatoes.  ha.  I tried one year and the plants were beautiful, big, lush, tall.  I only got a couple of tomatoes from each plant before the plant died as well. I was so disappointed that  I gave up the potted tomato plants after that.  I've had friends that used pots successfully but I bought a tiller and plant everything in the ground now.

That's exactly what happened to me, too.

You'd think that Florida would be a great place to grow things.  But where I live, it's basically a sand bar.  The soil's not so good it doesn't percolate well.  So that's why I went to pots.

Oooh Barbara.  I have been considering planting watermelons, or canteloupe but they would be new to me.
How much room do the melons take and how many plants to you have?

Your pics look awesome.

Jane,

The Watermelon plants grow kinda like pumpkins...lots of vines that go EVERYWHERE!
We got 4 watermelons off of 1 plant...but only 1 that size.  It was fun to grow.
