A gaming engine is what we use to develop a game. It provides rendering, scripting, animating, lighting, physics capabilities, etc...Not all engines have all of these pieces. Some offer more.  In our case, we are using an engine that has already been developed so that we do not have to create our own.

Andy: Why the switch to Cry3 in August? Does it have similar licensing terms to UDK?

We are switching to Cry Engine 3 in August since it is a vastly more powerful engine than unreal 3, and yes there is going to be a free developer kit similar to UDK launching in August.
