Bringing Peyote Arts to Market: Consumers, Curators, and Collections Building

Daniel Swan, Ph.D., associate professor at the University of Oklahoma and associate curator of ethnology at the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History, will examine the rapid growth of the Peyote religion among the Navajo and the expanded commercial availability of Peyote arts in
and around the Navajo Nation. Using data and insights gained from 20 years of research, Swan
concludes that the Navajo situation is far from unique and is, in fact, one episode in the cyclical history of the commercial availability of Peyote arts. Free with museum admission.

Individuals with early-stage Alzheimer's and their care partners are invited for a gallery discussion of specific art pieces followed by a related hands-on art activity that includes both individual and group participation. Museum Babies I is especially designed to nurture the needs of both parent and infant. For the first half hour, adults will enjoy a casual experience in the galleries, learning about the art of Gilcrease Museum. The second half hour will be "baby time" with activities to stimulate the five senses. Come enjoy museum time with your infant. (Parents are asked to bring a receiving blanket for the baby).

Master Classes - Landscape Composition According to Edgar Payne @ Zarrow

Artist Joey Frisillo will teach adult students to compose or strengthen their skills in composing landscapes. Sessions will include gallery sketching in the exhibition Edgar Payne: The Scenic Journey. Instruction will be based upon Payne's book, Composition of Outdoor Painting. The class is open to any level of artistic experience. All two-dimensional painting media are welcome during the studio portion of the class. Students will be provided a supply list upon registration. Purchase of the resource book is optional. It will be available the first day of class for $29.
