 OFFLINE | Hi there,
as I stated before I am pretty annoyed by
a.) feeling misinformed with self-installing OSM data
b.) not being able to get maps easily
I would be willing to pay the extra 69 € and order the SD with HD material for Europe. Different reasons why I'm hesitating:
- I don't have any clue what customs will do and charge; does anybody have experience for Germany or Switzerland (I have shipping / c/o addresses in these two countries)
- as far as I understand the data on this card will be OSM data as well and not Navteq - I think it is really nasty to take freely available open source data, convert it to prevent altering and then sell it. I really consider this a no go!
Right now I am really considering to send it back - which is a shame because I like the little pal.
But Bryton, you're map policies is really rubbish!
Anyway, I drifted away... Can anyone of you provide any answers to my questions?
Would appreciate an official statement by Bryton as well.

OFFLINE | When you order a SD card with Navteq HD maps in the Bryton Eshop at €69 (without shipping), you get a SD card with Navteq HD maps with all Europe country's activated. When you bought a Rider 50 recently, there must be a DVD with Navteq HD maps in the box. From this DVD you can put maps on the SD card (included) and activate one country of your choice for free.
I don't know what customs do with SD card, I think nothing. |

 OFFLINE | Hi, Andy,
Thank you Rene, for explaining the HD maps. Yes, the HD map is Navteq.
For the customs, the VAT is 19% out of €69. hope this helps! |

Thanks for your reply first of all. Unfortunately the HD DVD is missing in my package, got 2 disks containing SD material containing Western Europe.
At least now I have confirmation that the SD card containing Navteq data. I really thought so far that it was OSM. I can live with paying 69€ plus VAT for that - even though it still annoys me I wasn't aware of these extra costs when getting the Rider.
Would be still nice to hear s.th. official concerning the time frame for user-installable OSM data. What do you say, Bryton?

OFFLINE | Yes, had mine for about five months now and it came with the Navteq HD maps. All you get is an outline of the roads with street names, if you zoom out you can see different shading based on the topographic detail. That's about it really. All the screenshots i saw before buying must have had OSM installed as they show more detail.
I wasn't too bothered as i've been mainly road cycling, but now i'm on my mountain bike it's pointless and i have to take my smartphone with me too just to check out the off road trails. |

OFFLINE | Alright, thanks for that info. I think I'll have to be true to myself and send it back. I'm afraid if I don't I'll regret it if they never bring OSM import. At least now I know what to get myself for Christmas - it'll be a Garmin Edge 800. I think considering myself being much more satisfied in the end the higher price tag is really worth it. |

I don't understand your problem. When you have SD cards with Navteq maps, the only thing you have to do is activated one country of your choice for free.
Yes the OSM maps are much more detailed, but believe me, with the better zoom, the HD maps works pretty fine for road cycling. With HD maps you can navigate with the device (like Tomtom) this isn't possible with OSM maps.
When you buy a Garmin 800, you have to pay a lot of euro's more and have lots of problems with the device and the soft/firmware, so I can read on a Dutch cycling forum. More then with Bryton, and Garmin do not listing to customers at all. |

OFFLINE | The point is that I am going to use it for mountain biking - and for that purpose OSM would be much better in my region.
There are options to get OSM data on Garmins - even if it's not too officially implemented.
To be quite frank I appreciate being listened to by a company as a customer - but with a needed key function missing what is it good for?
At least now we have confirmation and some time frame (see other post about OSM) - I really do hope that they stand to their words in the end. |

OFFLINE | One not of customs: I ordered mine in the NL, and it came I had to pay additonal tax for customs but also for handling. In total the extra costs where over 30 Euros + shipping + the 69 Euro the SD card costs.
I do see a difference between the maps on the SD cards and the map I activated from the box, the street catalog is larger.

OFFLINE | Got mine lately as well, shipped to Switzerland. No customs here, so it's been the 69€ plus 14€ shipping.
Need to make a backup asap. Haven't been able to use it that much so far but there definitely is a difference to the low def cards that came with my Rider 50.
Still do hope the promises Bryton did will come true concerning OSM installations... For off road reasons ;-D |
