I found this forum post that shows a much easier way of adding in-game friends without scrolling through the power rankings.

Basically, you just look through the page's source code for your user ID. Then you can create a custom link for other people to send you friend requests.

You should see a white page that says something like "Status: friend request sent". And that's it! You can check your outgoing ravens to see that you really did send a friend request.
