Rain bursts dam, knocks out bridge on Dominica
Associated Press

The prime minister of Dominica has declared a disaster zone around the area where heavy rain knocked out an earthen dam and caused severe flooding in the Caribbean island.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says the collapse of the Matthieu dam destroyed part of a bridge, damaged buildings and flooded farms. He estimated the damage to the bridge over the Layou River at more than $3 million.

Skerrit tells reporters he has asked the U.S. and French governments to help assess the extent of the damage. No one was killed when the dam burst before dawn Thursday.

I had a coworker who was sent to Dominica by the US Government to help assess this landslide when in first came down (along with another one near by) and blocked a major tributary of the largest river in the country.  While a bridge getting washed out and $3 million in damages may not sound like much to most of us, but is the 20th poorest nation in the world and $3 million is .4% of their total GDP.

The GDP info and location maps are off the CIA World Factbook website

Are we planning to send aid?  I hope we do.  We need to make friends in our hemisphere and sounds like those folks need help.
